What gives???? Where is all this canine cancer coming from???? I've heard just lately about several dogs going to " Doggie Heaven " from it.. To my knowledge none of these dogs smoked or worked around asbestos... Someone told me about packaging companies that bags a variety of products for different companies, including fertilizer and dog food...I wonder if there is anything to this theory??? I lost my little service truck buddy last November to the big C..My wifes Ex just lost his pooch. A guy I work with lost a couple of dogs to cancer..As a kid I never heard of this..It seemed like " Ole Shepp" just faded away from old age...Anybody got any other theories????

Isn't the strong unexplained odor coming from a dog the sign of the canine parvo virus?

My Westie has developed a strong odor that I can't explain. Its a sick odor but the vet can't figure it out and she is still friskie. She is 9 years old and smarter than a lot of people.

I don't know the answer, but I shot my golden retriever (8 years old) last summer due to cancer. Wasn't an easy thing to do, but was easier (and cheaper) than letting the butchers do it.

Pesticides man. Also, dogs have an accelerated aging process compared to our own. So just remember that a 12 year old Dog is like 80 in our years when is pretty good and you are more prone to disease at an older age.

Sorry to hear about your pets.

I lost my Dobie to bone cancer two years ago. He was only 7. He went to the vet every year for shots and was fed dog and people food. He was my best friend. Smarter than a lot of people. I could go on, but you get the idea.

I think that it's simply genetics. Dobies, for example are prone to several diseases and cancers. Other dogs are suseptable to other kinds of problems.

Vets can pinpoint problems now, where in the past it was chalked up to "old age". Canine medicine has come a long ways, just like human medicine.

Aint that amazing. in reply to Steve Crum, 06-10-2006 05:17:56
Ya know I've heard a few friends that work in your line of work and they say the same thing.

In my opinion, a lot of these new cancers and diseases for our pets come from just plain modern life. A dog walks through a lot of stuff on the ground now days. If you take your pet with you and they have to walk on asphalt or cement sidewalks and stuff where cars drive and park, then they lick their feet for grooming and consume whatever was on their little feet.

I was visiting with a lady that has a couple parrots and other birds as her pets. Me being a farmer, asked her what sort of seeds are best for the birds diet. She told me just a diet of unprosessed seeds is what kills these birds of liver problems. They need a balanced diet much closer to a humans diet. I'd have never guessed that. I learned a lot that day.

We cover our dogs with chemicals today. Flea and tick treatments etc. My theory on where all the cancers come from.

Roy

One theory is that dogs have always died of cancer but the owners did not know it.

Dogs make many more trips to the vet than they did years ago.

If a dog got old, sick, and died well he was old and died.

Know if they get old and sick they go to the vet and the vet says its cancer then they die.

Just my thoughts. Gary

IaGary..... I'm with you. people run to the vet with their critters everytime they get a fart crossways..poor ol' poopsie,,time for his/her shots!

I have owned dogs all my life. They sleep on the porch or the barn..they aint humans and critters dont live in the freakin house! My dog right now is beyond 10...never seen a vet in his life....eats whatever comes his way. Drinks from the pond. He's happy and so am I.

It pisses folks off when a human lowers the status of dogs and cats back down to where they belong...because they have humanized them. I have had dogs get sick, lead cures most maladies. The way people do now is go pay some vet to do it for them..haven't got the stomach for it....and seemingly makes it all proper to use the the term 'put down' instead of saying "I blew Spot's brains out with a .22"..... same end, no difference.

As for the dog food...hehehe, I had a time keeping my kid from eating it when he was 3-4 years old. So, I had a taste of it.....salty/bland/corn chip taste to me. I've seen it made.....mush squirted through an extruder at high pressure, chopped and ran under heat lamps on a conveyer belt and then bagged....pretty neat.

Whats the next doggy disease to exploit....bow-wow emphysema? Dogheimers?!!!!!

I love the "dogheimers" I think old Cali has suffered that most of her life. Talk about a 96 pound Doberman chicken. I have to agree with running to the Vet's every time the dog gets a fart cross ways. I can tell you I cannot believe what people do for their pets. Our plant carries certifications from everything from USDA to the AIB. Why ? Our customers demand it. I see more quality controls, HCCIP programs and testing of petfoods, then I ever saw in my former life in the human grade industry.
