We just got back from our trip to Nebraska and Pioneer village (and a graduation). When I was farmin' in Nebraska 30 years ago we always said corn should be "knee high by the fourth". We meant the 4th of JULY. Wow! on the 4th of June the corn around Shelton, Kearney, and Minden was already knee high! Those big John Deere's with the big tanks on them we saw going down the rows by Ft. Kearney must have been putting on baseball steroids. We had fun, though, and it was good to be back "home" again where the roads were straight and in square miles rather than the bends and curves here in North Carolina!!

Knee high by the 4th went out with the horses.Fertilzer and hybrid corn plus many other factors make the statement obsolete..Local newspaper still prints it every year and every year. Heck some of it will be tasseling by the 4th. You dont talk to your tractor like you used to do to horses, well maybe.
