Rebuilding a little 4 cylinder Continental flathead here and I've pulled off the water pump. Wasn't leaking before nor was it making any noise or heating up BUT it sure seems tight when I turn it by hand. Should it spin freely or at least not seem tight? Can't remember what other one's I've done were like. Any idea why it might feel tight and tough to turn. I guess this would be the time to fix it right? What do you think is wrong in there?

Depends what kind of tightness. There are three potential areas that can cause it - #1 the ball-bearing assembly, #2 the impeller rubbing against the housing, and #3 friction in the seal assembly. The only one of those three that should exist is the last - seal drag. Most pumps use a spring-loaded seal that is supposed of have some drag.

I've changed a lot of water pumps and all the new or rebuilt pumps that I have changed turn stiffly. Only the worn ones will spin and that's usually because of worn bearings and seals.
