How long can Diesel fuel be kept in dry storage tanks until it becoems too old to use?
We still have about 50 gal. bought at the end of 04". No visible water in the sump sample we took yesterday, but when do you know it has gone bad like Gasoline?
TIA; Tom S. in Tn.

Fuels tend to form gums when they age. A lot of fuels today have an inhibitor in them. Storage conditions play heavily on aging. If a tank is exposed to tempperature extremes it will age quicker than one that isn't exposed to major temp. changes. Water is the other big item. Even though it starts out dry ,condensation is occuring daily. With the water then comes the bacterial growth. It doesn't take much to get a growth going in a fuel tank. 04 fuel ought to be good for a couple of more years, but filtration as mentioned is the best solution to potential problems.

I have successfully, no problems at all, used Diesel fuel that has been stored above ground for 10 years. I have a filter on the tank outlet and all the fuel is filtered as it enters the hose.My belief is that the filter is crucial. Lots of previous posts here on the same subject, search the archives.

Thanks. I have a filter in place and agree completly. I will put a new filter on before pumping.
