How does the Farmall M compare to the Massey Harris 44? Thanks

Both great tractors...don't believe a stock 44 even with a bigger carb will hit 64 HP, but if it's all the same to you guys, I'll just climb on my old JD A and do the same work (except anything in reverse, as the A probably goes as fast in revers as either of the others does in 5th) and be a whole lot more comfy plowing on that big ol' square padded seat that has a back rest!

Grew up on a Farmall M and a M-H 44. Both comparable and great tractors. The 44 had a faster fourth gear than the M so I liked to rake with it. But, it also had live pto so it was more handy to bale with than the M. Seat on the 44 was more comfortable. The M had a touch more traction.

No stock 44 ever had 63 horsepower.

Now you've got me thinking of the good old days. Golly, I sure plowed a lot of ground on that 44 with a 3X plow and at night, the fire would shoot right up out of that muffler.

Great times in the past with two great tractors.

I have to agree with everything you said, have a 44 and an M and I like each one better for different things, there both good tractors, but the M should be much easier to find parts for..

44s are not 63 hp. 43 to 45 as how do they compare they have a lot better gear range. Ms have a BIG jump between 3 and 4 3 is to slow and 4 is to fast for some field work and i think the massey is more user friendly easy to work on but in there day they both were great tractors and they still are

I suspect the Massey has been played with a bit, 63 horsepower is a lot. You are correct about the M having 36 horse, except that is what they had when new, most Ms have been rebuilt using the 4 inch pistons, which will get you up to 46 horse, and if you use the high compression pistons with the high compression head, you will now be up to about 55 or more. All of this was done to the Ms when they were still working tractors. Actually the 44 Massey and the Farmall M were pretty much direct competitors, and rated for the same amount of work.

There has been a lot of darn good whiskey drank in the process of comparing the two. In my area it would take more cash to buy a good running M than it would to buy a 44. There is a lot of both still running.
