OK - maybe I"m a little too "fussy" about this...
I take care of my stuff. I use it, but don"t abuse it! I change oil, filter and fluids and fix things when the need to be fixed - never let it go. If you do, pretty soon you have major problems.
The guys across the road has a 666. I love that tractor. He"s had it about 5 years and has NEVER ONCE changed the oil, let alone anything else! Wires hang down from the alternator, and he moans "cause he has to charge the battery. Tank is full of rust... that kinda stuff just drives me crazy!! That tractor could really be a nice machine if he"d put forth a little effort. I"ve offerred to buy it, but he won"t sell. (Really, more of a rescue mission!) I think he should be hog-tied and beaten - but it"s his stuff. Nice NH baler he leaves out in the rain, and on, and on, and on...
Know anybody like this??

As a mechanic I see it all the time. I was joking with a guy today about the stickers you sometimes see on equipment saying "This machine pays your salary, take care of it" or something to that effect. I think I'm gonna have some made up that say "This machine pays my salary...go ahead and run the he-- out of it cause I got bills to pay..." Just joking of course but sometimes I feel that way. Especially when I tell a customer the need to do something that will eleminate or reduce problems or about something their already doing wrong that's causing problems...and they keep right on doing the same things and bit--ing about the problems their having. Like the saying goes "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink"

My father is that way. Makes good money and wont take care of a thing. Leaking valve stem on a ford 5000 is rotting a rim due to calcium, all of the low pressure fuel lines in the diesel were cracked, bad and leaky fuel filter, and wonders why it wouldnt run? I get sick of hearing about it. Dont throw it away, it used to run, lol

I help out some friends that run a dairy that way. This skidsteer has four bald tires that don't hold air, has not seen grease in 7 years and a bucket made from scrap iron. They have a New Idea Uni-chopper that needs a radiator leak fixed but have been using it for two years now just adding water every other wagon load. I offer to help (for free) clean up the machine shed, yard, and equipment but they don't want to put out any effort to do anything extra. I store my 1947 Farmall MD there and some days that is the only tractor that will start on its own out of 8 total. They also have two farmall M's and a Farmall Super C that are all stuck but they will get running and use on the farm someday. Grrrrr Makes me really mad when I go up there and see that good iron going to waste.

some people arent as fortunate to have nice sheds to park all the equipment underneath. For instance, we no longer have an implement shed anymore since a windstorm blew ours away. So, it is too damn expensive to build a nice new shed, so some of the stuff, I guess all of it now, has to sit outside. I wish I had a nice shed to put the stuff under, because I know how much it can make a difference in 10 yrs.

But about the maint. Keep the equip running and working properly. I try to keep things clean and in good repair, or else you are asking for break downs, fire, etc..

Tex,
That"s true about the sheds... but at least a tarp is better than nothing - and they are not THAT expensive. Money for a shed is not this guy"s problem - he buys all kinds of fancy chickens, implements, has his mares bred to good stallions. I saw him park a car in front of a section of broken fence to keep his horses in, instead of fixing the fence. Then, 4 months later was howling about how cheap batteries and cars are made now-a-days. Cost him 68 bucks for a new battery to get the car started and he left the window down, so the inside was a mess. I gave (GAVE) him a roll of barb wire and it"s still setting next to his barn door where I put it down two years ago... rusting away.
The guy is just plain lazy

I see it all the time. I am suprised he is having problems though ? Usually I seem to have the problems with stuff I fuss over and those types seem to get along fine.

MY brother is like that. He will leaves every piece he owns sit outside. 2002 NH TN30 tractor (I think) haybine, baler, rake, mowers on and on. I dirves me up the wall that he can't understand why I never have any time to goof off. I work my stuff hard, but I fix the broken stuff right away. I just hate to see good old equipment just sitting there rusting away. I guess I need to plant one of those money trees.

Yep, sounds familiar. One of my neighbors tries to run about 6 or 7 quarters of land by himself. About 4 of them have cattle on them year round and the grass never gets more than 1/2 an inch tall. Cattle are inbred, scruffy, diseased, and poorly fed. He runs nearly all new equipment, but most of it only sees an oil change every 1000 or 2000 hours. Some of these tractors (nearly new FWA New Hollands) spend most of their time sitting in some field or corral propping up the fences. There's a really nice mid 60's Cat D8 (only saw 1 year of hard bush duty) sitting in a pile of manure, just rotting away (it ran a couple of years ago, but now has mag trouble on popper motor). Also a couple other older machines, still in good condition, but just rotting from not getting any usage. But he "might use it again someday" so he won't sell it!
Better stop now, before I kick something in frustration.

Lyndon
