Engine overheated and rings are frozen to cylinders. Have had ATF in the plug holes
for an hour. How much longer should I wait before I try to turn the engine over?

If they're frozen Onion Rings, you'll want Peanut Oil instead of ATF. Heat it up to about 300 degres and drop em in. It should take your mind of your troubles with the engine.

After you get it repaired or the new engine try not to do this again. Frozen rings are the least of your worrys. Probably your best bet in the future will be to make sure you have at least minimun oil level and some coolant..... .

If you locked it up bad enough that after it cooled down you still couldn't turn the engine over then its most likely toast. You probably scored the cylinder walls and destoryed the pistons. Time for either another engine or a complete engine rebuild includeing the sleeves. You might even have cracked the head to boot

Sized not frozen, Little Hope Re: Frozen Rings in reply to Martini, 06-16-2006 13:29:29
Sized not frozen, Little Hope. Now if it has been just an hour since it happened give it a day. Usualy little hope for gas engines as they have a hot cumbustion temp that gall pistons If you really cant get it freeded up try putting pure Limeaway or CLR in the cyl, that will eat the Alum off the cyl walls. But usualy you got yourself a tear down as the rings will not sping out right again and hold compression. Hope this needed OHaul any ways.

I hate to break the bad news to you, but if the engine siezed because of overheating the ATF probably will not help. Like Bob said, it's probably the aluminum from the pistons that has bonded to the cylinders.

More than likely it's the aluminum piston metal that has bonded itself to the bore.
