Well I have this old thing, runs well but any more its just to much for me to be able to pull the rope to start it. Is there a way to add a starter to it or maybe a compression release so I can pull it over?? Or maybe I should just sell it and find a belly mower for one of my tractors??
Thanks

I have one of these things that was VERY hard to start. What I did was mount a starter(need one with a long shaft when the bendix is removed). I mounted this starter with the back of the starter toward the front of the mower. I welded a tab on the front of the starter, and a tab on the center to match the frame.I added a pulley to the shaft in line with the pull pulley on the machine. Get a belt to fit the pulley's. when the motor startes flip the belt off with a stick, and you are on your way. Stan

Not to be a pain. A very long time ago I was shown how to start up an "L" by a dealer. I was 14 at the time in 1964. With the strap on the pulley with one wrap you turn the pulley counter clockwise till you feel compression. Then wrap the rest of the strap. Stand in a partial crouch and pull upwards and fall backwards just a little at the same time. Like falling off of a log while your hands go up to your chest. This works on the first pull about 80% of the time on mine and it is easy on you. There is nothing like a self start but a hot mag is a beautifulllll thing! If you need more help then go for the self start. They do work very nicely. The small drive gear is a VERY wearable out item. Have fun. Jeffcat

Yes Gravely made a started setup for the L's. I found mine on ebay but you should figure on a couple of hundred for it unless you are very patient and wait are around for the occasional bargin. Anyway made all the difference in the world in starting the old bugger especcially in the winter. Not hard to put on, the hardest part for me was getting the old starter pulley off otherwise not big deal. I was able to get mine for a bargin as it came without the battery mounting which some scrap angle and the welder took care of.

Gravely used to offer an electric start kit for the L models.Maybe scrounging around some lawnmower shops will turn up the needed parts,at least the driven sprocket with a roller clutch that bolts to the crankshaft. I believe they used an old style ford starter mounted on a flatiron bracket below the muffler with a sprocket on it instead a bendix, and a piece of #35 chain to the sprocket/clutch on the crank. They mounted the battery just in front of the hood, and did not use a charging system on the L models, you had to charge the battery every so often.
