I think it was Mr. old that contributed this fix.
Remove the tank, dump in some sand and small pebbles, plug holes. Then attach to a tractor wheel (bungee straps, rope, etc) and drive around for a while - about a mile or two should do it. Dump the tank and coat the inside of the tank with the stuff mentioned above. I did this with a rusty gas can, and it worked like a charm!!

strapping it to a cement mixer works better.

I use the cement mixer, but do not use rocks. I use nuts or nails. They can be retrieved with a magnet. Hard to get rid of sand, etc. Also, I use a small plastic tube in the sediment bowl assembly- squeezes in easier than a solid pipe.

I agree w JMS. I use a liquid called Os Pho. It eliminates the rust, rinse it. Let it dry, then use a tank liner Red Coat from O"Reillys parts. A quart runs about $20, but enuf to do 2 or 3 tanks. I have done all my tractor tanks w/this stuff. So far, after 4yrs, no rust in the sed bowl or carb. Gas is so expensive, have to save every drop..... .
Good Luck

I have real good luck using "The Works" toilet bowl cleaner after the rock method. Poor the whole bottle in the tank then add a couple gallons of water. Work that around awhile then let set, then work it around some more. Poor out and rinse out real good. This is very caustic so do be carefull with it. You will see a shiny tank inside no matter how old it is. If you have pin holes in there you will have to use a tank liner. Follow directions with those or you will be redoing it later! Do it right and you will be done with it.

I've used the Works clean with good results too !

Only trouble was after rinsing you need to prevent it from flash rusting again while it dries out. I was able to use some moisture displacing penetrant oil and then flush it out later with thinner than later coat it with Red-Kote
