Chevy Pickup Brake Problem

I have a 1988 Chevy K2500 pickup and cannot get the rear brakes to work. I have replaced all the steel line back to and across the rear axle to each wheel cylinder. The right side rear will bleed fluid when I bleed it and the left rear will not bleed fluid at all. I jacked the rear axle up into the air and put truck in gear and found that neither sides brakes work when applied. Can the problem be in the master cylinder? The front brakes work fine. I dont know what to do now but to replace the master cylinder in the truck.

If it is only a gravity trickle of fluid from the wheel cylinder, it is probably the master cylinder. If you get a good bleed flow when the pedal is floored, it is the air in the unbled side causing the problem. Some master cylinders used to "lock out" if the piston was pushed too far in the bore, to prevent further fluid loss if there was a leak. Don"t know whether yours is like that. If it is you may need to back-bleed the cylinder from the rear nipples (after fixing the stuck piston - as it may stick due to moving into a fresh, unpolished part of the bore)

If this is like the half-ton version,it has antilock brakes on the rear only. There is an unloading valve attached to the master cylinder (unless someone removed it, always a possibility). There's a bleeder screw on the unloading valve that you should bleed prior to bleeding the rear brakes.

None of that explains why you can get fluid out of the right rear, but not the left. It sounds to me like you have a plugged bleeder on the wheel cylinder. You say you replaced the brake lines, so I suspect there's a piece of rust stuck in the bleeder.

As old as this pickup is, it probably has multiple problems. You may end up replacing everything: wheel cylinders, master cylinder, unloading valve and proportioning valve. Yes, it will cost you some money, but you can't put a price on good brakes.
