Wife's nephew brought me his '86 Mustang with a 2.3 liter four-banger, and asked me to help him fix it. Seemed the car would start and run, but then run down. So yesterday I fired it up, after considerable pumping, and after about 15 seconds it quit running altogether, sounding like it was struggling to get enough fuel.So my first impulse is to check the fuel filter at the carb. Evidently, the fuel filter hadn't been off in awhile, so I got my pocket screwdriver and tried to pry on the hose a little...when I noticed that the carb rocked from side to side. Thinking the carb was loose at the base, I got a socket and extension to tighten it down...and found it was already tight. Apparently it was rocking from looseness between the main carb body and the baseplate, So I removed the carb, and discovered that two of the four screws that attach trhe baseplate to the main body were missing. Further examination showed that the holes were stripped, and no threads remained. I'd seen this before, on a Carter BBD on a '76 AMC Hornet. Is this also common on the Carter/Weber carbs on the Mustangs as well? Or was this just an isolated case of a heavy-handed wrench monkey somewhere down the line?
