Do you remove the battery through the winter, or while the mower is in storage? Batteries last longer that way. Store the battery in the house through the winter, and not on the cement basement floor. It'll die sooner if left in the mower, if it is outside in freezing temperatures, or if it's sitting on the ground, or even on just a concrete floor. Put an inch board under it to get it off the floor, and it'll survive the winter just fine. Starters draw a large amount of current in a big surge. Your battery could very well be good enough for the much lighter loads of energizing alternator windings and charging a coil for spark, or your mower may very well have a mag (though I haven't seen mags on mowers since the 80s.) Either which way, I'd get a new battery. Sounds like this one is pretty weak. You can always try adding water and trickle-charging (<=10A) it overnight, but in the end if your battery is 10 years old, it won't last much longer anyway. Storing the battery as described above, I've gone 8 years on a single mower battery, but 10 is a stretch.
