MF 35 questions

Recently purchased a MF 35 gas, 1963 model, it was vandalized, wiring messed up, gauges busted, been sitting for a while. Got it running this weekend, have a couple of questions:
The key switch has 4 "on" positions. I assume one for ignition, 1 for lights, what are the others?
The PTO lever. grinds when engaging, with clutch in or out, in gear or out, I feel sure the power is "live" but the grinding when engaging does not seem right.

Push the clutch in when you engage the PTO

I don't have my 35 anymore, but I recall the switch is for different combinations of lights with and without the engine running. Position 1 is everything off. Position 2 is engine on. 3 is engine and lights. 4 is lights on, engine off. Or something like that.

The PTO shifter is sliding a gear into and out of mesh. No synchronizers. It shouldn't grind hard, but you should feel it into gear, not just shove it.
