I bought a house half finished and need to run water (1000 feet). The previous owner buried 2 gas lines in the same trench as the electric line. The gas lines are buried at 30 inches and the eletric is 48 inches. Can I use the gas line to run my water? The lines are 2 inch yellow flexible lines. It says "gas use only" but one of the contractors at the water department told me I could use it for water also.

Aloha, I would think that the 2" pipe would be like a snake under the ground and not level (straight). No way would you be able to run a 1" line thru it without hanging up especially for 700'. It would be easier and faster to run a new pipe.

Bill,

That was plan #2. They buried two 2 inch gas lines side by side. I maybe able to pull/push a 1 inch line through each...split the main into two 1 inch lines, run them the length of the buried gas line, then join them together before taking it into the house.

The question is, can I push pull 700 feet of 1 inch line through? Is there a line flexible enough, like Pex? I doubt I could make it with rigid pipe.

What you do on your property is entirely up to you, but I wouldn't do it. See if the contractor can show you in writing where it's ok to use pipe marked for gas in a water (potable???)system. Even if it wasm't actually used for gas, I wouldn't think an inspector would let that fly. If it actually had gas run through it at one time, no way. Local plumbing supply house should be able to get you a definite answer also. It's no doubt a candy-a$$ liability issue.

I would not risk it. What would happen if a few years down the road a repair is being made. "Hey Jake lets just tap into this one."

Good point. Forgot PE is color coded for a reason.
