Just listening to a live radio report on a fire west of town here. Over 1000 big round bales of this year's hay in 3 stacks are burning. About 30 firefighters from 4 departments, plus lot's of volunteers are working on it. With a South wind @ 30 mph, and temperatures headed for the 90's today...not the best recipe!
The farmer's Wife reported she looked out the window this morning @ 5:30, and saw one bale burning on the top of a stack. You have to wonder what the cause is.

Afew years back, the kids thought it was neat to set fire to haybales left in the fields. (Kinda like bashing mailboxes.) Haven"t heard about any haybale burnings lately, but it will probably run another cycle soon. I had one fire where they set two ablaze, and about 3 acres burned as well. Thanks to a neighbor who called in the fire, and the volunteer FD who did a super job, or the loss would have been far worse!

I have seen a round bale get struck by lightning and get set on fire.

I've never heard of round bales catching fire from internal heat. It's known that hay put up too wet can heat enough to start burning. I've never seen it happen though. I figured it was more likely in the days hay was put in the barn loose.
There was a picture last weekend in the Syracuse paper of a flooded farm near Binghamton. His round bales floated down the Susquehana river.

Hey MJ, they darn sure can and will burn and will catch fire. The ten bales in this barn had been in there about 6 weeks when one of them caught. Took a 60x60 wood frame, metal bu8ilding down in about three hours. Harley

I hope they're not shy about applying the Class A foam. That won't put it out, but it should knock it down and control things until the pile can be broken up. Then hose it down. Don't think they're going to save any hay though....

Had lots of those here before. The hay is gone and nothing you can do but protect surroundings and call in help from neighbors with loaders to move burning hay to a better location if possible to finish burning. Lots of loader help moving it if possible away from unburned hay yet is the only way to save any of it. That's why it's a bad idea to have all your eggs (hay) in one basket (stack).

I meant to say move the good hay not burning yet with loaders to another location. Stirring the burning hay is just going to cause more problems so leave it where it's at because it's going to burn. Also don't move what you think to be good non burning hay by another stack not on fire yet because it may go up yet too!
