Well, I got my socks on right so far by getting the cylinders out. Lots of gukk and dirt and I grunted a little to get one off. Now that the cylinders are off, I see the leather collars (about a 3/4" wide). They both look ok but I know that sometimes my socks don't match too :>)

Now on the inside there is ribbed or wide spoke deal surrounding the connection shaft that is about a 9/16ths and a couple of inches long.

Please correct me if I missing something (I know my terms are wrong).

Now do I just pry that leather collar on the tip off with flathead or do I need to take the spoke thing off too?

Thanks Scott ps. sorry I didn't have my camera with me or this could have been simplier to just show instead of explain.

Yep, you've got it.

Just use your screwdriver to pop that leather off the raised shoulder it sets on after you remove the retaining bolt in the end. Put the new leather back up on that shoulder, put the reinforcement sping-cup in it's center, bolt of 'em on and shove 'er back up in the tube. It helps to put a little oil on the leather to help it start in the cylinder lip.

They never "look" bad; they just get "out of round" and get "flat spots", mostly because of the weight of the darned loader arms.

A lot of guys will park the loader with the arms up to keep pressure on the seals and force them out against that cylinder wall at all times.

Dunno if that helps or not, but you can figure on this little job every three to five years.

Allan

I will cut you all the slack you want! I'm very appreciative for your help because I really need to get this thing running again. That thing hauls shingles to the top of a two story farmhouse much easier than I do on a ladder. Good loader for working on buildings and moving snow. (FYI- its sitting on a 49 M distillet- sure can't find a sediment bowl that has two gas lines on it anymore).

Hopefully this is my last question:

Is there another seal near the retaining collar at the foward end of the cylinder (what would make the cylinder shine when its extended) right around the short 3/8" or 7/16" bolt?

And around that bolt, (if sitting on the tractor looking down at it) the left cylinder has an outside retaining collar and the right one fits inside. Is this just the way they are or did someone repair the loader at sometime with a different cylinder? If you can remember- I'm just curious.

Thanks again- Scott

Hi Scott,

All that collar has is kind of a felt "dirt/birdpoop scraper" thing. In all my years, I've never replaced one; I think they probably all fell out over time. :>)

Yep, sounds like you've got two different collar types on there. Won't hurt it a bit.
