I am being over run by coons. They are in the barn , in the silo and all around the yard all the time at night. They are eating all the corn out of the feed bunks and silage. You can drive on the yard at night and they don't even run away any more. Getting real fed up . Does anyone know of a way to keep them away?

I bought a live trap for when they are a problem here, but I was not run over by them either. I would put several live traps out, as they will not hurt your dogs or cats around the barn. Bait the traps with canned mackeral. Stinky stuff, and cheap. If you don't have domestic pets around, standard steel traps will do great! I would then buy some CCI CB caps, for my .22 rifle. They shoot harder than a Benjamine air rifle, and are a lot quieter. 1 shot in the ear will do it. The thing about the CB caps though, they will not cycle in a semi-automatic. You have to use them in a bolt action, lever actio or pump action, that is designed for .22 shorts. My best luck is with a Marlin 39A lever action.

I would use a .22 rifle and use a plastic pop bottle on the end of the barrel, I have heard that this deadens the sound a lot.

We used to buy a .22 that was known as a "CB." I haven't bought any for years. My brother and I lived on the edge of town when we were going to college and were absolutely covered with pidgeon droppings. We were in the stage of the vehicles washed and waxed every week. These little CB's could be shot out of a rifle and would make almost no noise, made some if shot out of a revolver. Anyway, the pidgeons learned to stay away from that area. Good luck, Mike.

Light up the affected area, Get a nice beverage of your choice, set in a Tactical place, and let the Lead Fly. I will suggest a AR-15 in .223 or a Ruger Ranch Rifle Mini 14 both are .223 . They will do wonders for your racoon trouble and any one who may have been thinking of liberating anything from your door yard. After ALL THAT BLASTING YOUR ONLY visitors will be other Gun Enthusiasts ( usually honest people) !

Geez! I have always used a .22. I would expect a .223 to make the little buggers explode! I don't think I have ever seen one that weighed more than 30 lbs. If that. One neighbor killed 21 one year. The most for me was 8.

Good old yellow fly poison and Coke-a-Cola. Mix into a paste and the thieves will come running for it! *CAUTION* It will also work on cats and dogs. Lock up the critters you want to keep for the night and set the bait out for the ones you don't. It won't take long to rid the place of your bandits. They eat, they go about 15 feet, they die. Just collect the bait before you let the good critters out!

Just started using the fly bait - coke stuff myself and I can testify that it really does work. Haven't had one get fifteen feet yet, only three to ten feet. The cats are still running around and my friend said his cats haven't touched his 'coon bait' either. It's nice that they die quick before they have time to crawl under some inaccesible place to expire and 'ripen up' the air. Jim

One could always become reacquainted with the rousing sport of coon hunting. First you buy a pack of coon hounds and then you traine them to track raccoons!

Once you get real good at it, you won't have any more problems with raccoons, allthough the local PETA chapter might object---

Sounds like it time for target practice. I had coons killing my chickens till I did a hot wire around the fence and I also set live traps and then the coon would get a lead headache. Haven't lost any more chickens since I kill 4 of them. I did loose a baby duck the other day to a blake snake but that was the last time that snake will kill any thing either, it found out a 2X4 and its head didn't mix well

Why don't you get yourself a big dog that can fight and let him go at'em --- but if you don't wants dogs, then bait them with some good poison, I don't think rat poison is strong enough, I buy Strychnine from Canada, you can't buy it in the USA, but I do get it from them real easy... It takes care of my nice Coyotes too... I just mix it in with some cheap canned cat food... no problem then...

Commercial rat poison will kill them if they eat enough. If you buy D-Con and open the packets and dump in a bowl then mix in bacon grease they may eat enough. It could take a lot of it to get rid of the numbers you seem to have. I always use a rifle. Tape a good light under it and have fun. Use something small like a .22 or .17HMR so there is no bullet exiting to do colatoral damage!

We used some of that rat poison that comes in the big pellets and put it in a dish with some Coke. They love it, eat it like candy but they dont get too far before it is lights out.

if they are that bad, you can go to wal-mart and buy a cheap pellet gun.. I bought a 880s, shoots either BBs or pellets.. one shot to the head and they are done for.. even one shot to the body with the lead pellet, it make take awhile but they will die.. the gun only weighs around 4 pounds so it"s really easy to shoot.. bought mine for $30.. killed over 400 sparows with it..

A pellet gun won't do it. I had a raccoon visiting my cats and eating their cat food at night. After I caught him in the act one night (a coon eating cat food sounds louder than a cat, it's more like a dog eating cat food) I spent the next 3 nights out there, and drilled him with a 'high-powered' pellet rifle all 3 times at a range of about 17 feet. He was hurting, as evidenced by the piles of coon poop that accumulated (coons poop on things that cause them pain, as a signal to avoid it in the future.) But it didn't kill him. I had to go get a gun permit in order to buy a .22 rifle. One shot, one kill. In his frantic fleeing, he left a pretty good blood trail, but he didn't make it out of the building. Made it about 8 feet before everything went dark.

I like the 22. Pellet gun only scared off the rabbits. One round with a 22 and the rabbit was suddenly a paraplegic, which made him easy prey for the cats. They liked it better that way because he was easy to catch, and they would rather eat prey that they kill. So that's how my cats celebrated the 4th--with a feast! Only things left were the 2 back feet.

if you hit them in the right spot, a pellet gun CAN kill one.. I killed over 70 possoms last year alone.. also 8 coons three skunks and 10 ground hogs.. with a dasiy model 1000... but I kinda like the 880 better.. Tim Shultz

I use a .22 with a scope, hold the gun up to the shoulder with the trigger hand and steady with the flashlight held to the scope. One shot to the head and they usually get just out of the bardyard before they die. They don"t seem to run at night and the light doesn"t scare them (and it sounds like yours are conditioned to lights anyhow!)

Good luck,

Bill
