I need some help with my k161 kohler in my cub cadet. Last week I took it out of the tractor check the internals of the engine out. Ever since I got the tractor the engine ran okay but it had a rattle and it smoked a little, so little you hardly noticed it but it did blow a little white smoke. I was thinking the rod might be loose but it wasn't I popped the piston out and the rings looked ok the bore is smooth but not really worn. I can now turn the crank and I still here the noise. Sounds like something is loose somewhere but I don't feel anything loose. I don't know where to go from here. Mike.

Do you have the cam out, or is there slop between cam and crank gears? If the cam is still in, it could be something in the valve train also. Does it have the dynamic balance gears? Or possibly the crankshaft bearing? The balance gears, if you have them, run in needle bearings. The crank bearing should be a heavier ball bearing. At least it is in the bigger engines.

Off the wall thought: loose flywheel?

You should be able to download for free a service manual from kohlerengines.com.
