How do these tractors compare?

I need to buy a 40-50 horse tractor for general use like brush hogging, disking, etc. I have been looking at old Massey tractors like the 150, 165, 245, etc. How do the same vintage John Deere and Ford tractors compare? Like the 2040, 2240, 2440, JDs or the Ford 3000 series? The only tractor I am currently familiar with is a MF135 that I have borrowed. Thanks for the opinions....

If I had $8,500 on a good tractor, I would get a Foor 4600. Best all around tractor for that size that I have been around.

All other things being equal, the best tractor ever made in that size range is the Massey 165. But if you can find a good deal on a decent Ford or Deere similarly sized, you will be doing OK.

Where are you located? I know of a Massey Ferguson 250 in good shape for $6,000. I've run the tractor before and it's strong.

You will be happy with either choice! The JD will run a bit higher and parts are more expensive, but both of them are good machines. Good luck!

I have both JD 1020 and Massey 135. I like both of them. The JD has about 3 more hp but the massey will outpull it. JD has power steering and hydralic brakes massey does not All in what you like. I believe you will be ok with either one.Stay safe

I would like to stay under $8500. A local used dealer has a MF-245 and a JD-2040 for the same price. The tractors are comparable in horsepower, size and condition. I am new to tractors. How do these tractors compare?

The old saying, that you get what you pay for, probably applies here. The Massey's & Fords will be less money than the Deere's.Depends on what you want & how much money you have.
