Would like you all's opinion on a 3208 v-8 engine in a floater or steiger. I have heard that you are not to lug the engine and they will do fine. any opinions and answers will be fine. just wondering, I understand that the engine is a throw away engine. and are are sleeveless. that is about all I know about the engine.

They were great little engines for a single axle truck, but I think I'd pass on one in a tractor. It's all well and good to say that you won't lug the thing..... but in reality, we all lug them. The bottom end of the 3208 won't like that too much. Far as I'm concerned, it's not a tractor engine. Their best feature was their fuel economy in the light trucks. When they got to putting them in tandems, a lot didn't do so well, reliability wise. Just my 2 cents.....

For all the talk about the CAT 3208 being a "throw-away" engine, this is really a decent engine that has been used for over 35 years in fire trucks, tractor trailers (intra-city applications), ag tractors, CAT hoes, etc., and it does well for what it was designed as- a mid-range engine. The "throw-away" refers to the engine being parent bore, but it certainly is rebuildable except for the block and there have been a lot of other parent bore engines in the same application that are as good-Ford New Holland, Cummins B, International Powerstroke (t-444E), 3116 and 3126 successors to the CAT 3208, etc. As for any V-8, they do not lug as well as an inline engine of the same size, this is a function of the shorter sroke of the V-8. But keep the revs up and use the engine within its design limitations and you will do fine, just as for any two-cycle Detroit. just my $0.02.

Why not just look for a 250 -300 cummins better engine and it will not fall apart as fast as a v8 cat can sometimes .Cummins parts are a lot cheaper than a cat anyday .

Keep the rpm's up and don't load em down too much,
