Still Mowing Ditches?

Around here I see a lot of folks are still out mowing ditches and waterways. I would think with fuel prices the way they are, mowing would slide down the list of priorities. Heck, my neighbor mows his ditches all over the area almost as often as he mows his yard. Do you still mow? Is there an advantage that I don't see to mowing? Just seems like that would be an easy place to save diesel.

I have a 68HP diesel tractor that I use for roadside cutting. It uses 1.5 gallons per hour. Pulling a 6 foot mower doesn't take all that long (about 15 hours per year). Well worth the $ to me to have clipped roadsides for weed control, better visibility to avoid deer hits, keep brush out of power lines, facilitates snow plowing, and, it just plain looks better.

I mow my ditches, but $10 per year in fuel for the weed eater or push mower isn't going to break me either.
Now I wouldn't be running my diesel tractor and brushhog to get er done, but with the small engines being pretty efficient, I am not changing my ways.

I live in a rural area with plenty of habitat for small game, so no worries there.

I have a few miles of fence rows and ditches, and I use round-up on all of it. To hell with weed eating. I shoot round up to the point where I can get close enough with my zero turn mower. I use it on the driveway, to keep the grass from growing through the gravel, about 6 inches out from the house and barns, and ever around my wife's flower beds. Heck I don't think I have started my weed eater in a year!

Not mowing ditches and allowing fence lines to grow will improve wildlife habitat. Before brush killing chemicals and equipment that made fence row clean up easy, rabbits and quail had plenty of places to hide and raise young.

Fence row to fence row farming and the introduction of Kentucy 31 fescue along with the protection of birds of prey have made small game hard to come by.

As every cloud has a silver lining, maybe the high price of fuel might allow for the growth of small game again.

Seems the rabbits are easy to find in neighborhoods, but tougher to find when hunting, and a "clean" farm is a waste of time when hunting small game.

YES, I/we (my wife mows more than I do, I do the weedeating) mow the ditches and I trim around neighbors fence posts, or spray weed killer, he sprayed his fence rows this year so I didn't have to. I spray my fence rows and we keep 1 pass mowed with lawn mower on the inside of our 4 acre pasture. We like the way it looks and we have worked to hard to let fence rows grow back up in berry vines and brush. Wife mows yard (1 acre) with riding mower once a week when rainfall make it grow, which has been every week this summer. Mowing yard regularly like that keeps the mosquitos under control...

Around here it is common to mow 2x a year - and bale it for the cattle.

Never did understand the recreational, worthless, finish mowing of road ditches. Seems like a real waste of resources to me.

Officials 'round here kinda would like to make us farmers not mow ditches for hay, keep them for wildlife habitat.

If it comes to that, they better enforce that for all, lawn mowers as well.

Yep! Some of us still take pride in where we live and our surroundings. It is worth it to us to keep things neat and orderly.

I used to mow the ditch across the road from my house.
It just made my house look better.
The guy that owned that hayfield hired someone to
mow around the edges of the field this year so
I went out there and showed him what all to mow.
And of course I showed him the ditches that get mowed.

I keep another section of property mowed that isn't ours.
It is down along the river and it just looks better
if I keep it mowed. Since gas hit nearly $3/gallon
I quit mowing all of it. Just mow what's easy now.

This year I fenced off a large part of our 3 acres
and opened the gate to my neighbors cows.
Those cows have saved me a bunch of gas money.
And his cows need the grass. He supplied all the
fence materials and I did all the work.
So far it has worked out great for both of us.

I've always been told by my grandfather and neighbors that mowing during the summer/fall time keeps the snow from piling up in the ditches and eventually closing down roads, that is of course if you get snow in your area. Here in South Dakota we have some problems during the winter with snow so we do what we can now to help... plus that grass is feed for cattle, can't beat that...

I have strongly considered cutting back on what I mow because of high fuel prices, but due to the lack of rain I haven't had to mow very often, so it became sort of a non-issue.

What I don't understand are the folks that have to go across the road to mow a ditch adjacent to a farmer's field or pasture. Must be a status symbol if you can expand your mowing time. Even seen one homeowner across the highway going around the neighbor's fence posts with his trimmer.

I have 2 large ditches, around 350 feet total, one is around 5 feet deep, the other only a couple of feet. I use the weedeater on the deep one, and the rider on the other. I have 2 downspouts, 2 floor drains in the basement, and the kitchen sink and dishwasher goes to the deep ditch. I know its not code, but the house is around 150 years old. Anyhow I do it to keep the appeal, and also if anything goes in the ditch, it keeps on moving and has nothing to hang on. Security.

I've noticed a reduction in ditch mowing this year but not a huge reduction. Once a landlord gets used to seeing their ditches mowed they like to see them stay that way and if the neighbor mows his landlords ditches you'd better keep yours mowed too. If a land owner decides to rent me his farm I am going to take the best care of it I can which includes mowing the ditches, I'm not going to mow them every week but I'll do it once a year to keep the brush from growing up. Also around here mowing the ditches at least gives you a chance of seeing deer before they jump out in front of you at night.

I don't mow mine as often, but still mow them. Mowing helps control weeds and cuts down on fire hazard. Wouldn't save a penny on diesel, though, ain't got nothin' diesel on the place (won't, neither!)! Not mowing as often sure saves the GAS, though!

I love it when people start mowing. It is my second busiest time of year. Keep slashing those tires.
