I am finally putting a brake controller in my 98 GMC. It doesnt have a factory plug for a brake controller. Has anyone added a controller to this truck? The brake switch is WAY up under the dash and I am not sure how I am going to get to it to splice in. Any input? Thanks

hello,
You use the white wire in the bundle of wires going down the column, i think it"s the (f) position. You should also use a 20 amp circuit breaker wired to the batt. For the best instalation you should run the ground wire to the neg side of batt also. p.s. i have only put about 300 contollers in. Wes

don't get your power from the fusebox. Get a 20 amp circuit breaker from your local auto part store and take power directly from battery.

I wired my '98 Chevy and had problems until someone gave me the secret code. I can't remember now where the connection on the fuse block is, but if you email me later and remind me I'll go out and look under the dash. I'm at work now and the truck is home.

There is no adapter so to say under the dash, but there are some spots on that fuse box where you can hook at least the power and the brakes to. I found it by accident on my 98 looking for something else. You dont have to splice into the switch up there, there is a bundle of wire near the column that has a white wire that you can splice into. The "charge" wire and the power wire for the trailer brakes are under the hood. and the owners guide has the correct hookups in there for those.

i put a controler on a 95 chevy.the procedure should be the same. you need to drop the steering column . take the dash panel off and there is two bolts that holds the column up. drop it down and you can get to the brake switch. use a test light to find the side of the switch that is hot when the brake is used. hope this helps. daryl

'99 and later Chevy trucks are the only ones that have the pigtail included in the truck. For early models you have to use the cut and splice method and hook up each wire individually.

If your truck came with the trailering package, the "pigtail" wires for the controller comes in the glovebox.

Or you may be able to pick one of these up at the trailer, or rv store.

If so, that just plugs in down by your foot, by the fuse box, and all the wires are allready run to the plug at the rear bumper. There's a big fuse that get's installed from spare to trailer under the hood.
