When I attempted to shift from reverse to 4th gear in oliver 1600 it remained in reverse. Backed through fence before I could get it stopped. Fixed fence. How do I fix tractor???

Once the shift rails are lined back up, add a 3/8
lock washer to to tops of balls on shift lever and under the cover. This will allow the shifter to be held down in the rails. The cover has some wear and the springs are raising the shifter up just enough to slip out rails.

Take the steel plate off unless you can lift the shift lever off without doing that. To take the transmission cover off as was mentioned below involves removing the complete hydraulic unit, I would try my suggestion first. There are 2 springs under there that center the shifter handle. Take a flash light and look in there. The slots for the 3 rails will not line up. Take a small pry bar or big screw driver and pop the rail forward so that the slots line up. Questions find me on the Oliver or www/hpoca.org form. J.

Coul dbe a bent shifter fork.. worn shifter or worn pattern. If you are lucky.. it was just a worn shifter that slipped out of the fork, and the fork still has the tractor in R. in that case.. I'd repalce/repair the shifter, and get it lined back up and reinstasll in rev, and then shift out and go.

I'm not familiar with oiliver.. but on a fird you'd start by pulling the trans cover...
