Hi Guys,

I'm takin' 5 minute breather 'cause I'm about out of go-juice.

It is 102 degrees here as we speak. They just get these monsters calmed down a bit, then here comes the wind and away we go again.

Could someone please pass the rain?

Allan

Good luck Allan, and my prayers.

Rain's coming your way tomorrow, they say.

Now might be time to cut a couple of rings (inner and outer) with the mold boards or discs, and burn what's in between the rings so it can't burn what's inside of the inner ring if and when the fire gets close - a fire break or back burn. Don't gotta do the entire property, just far enough away from the house, barn, ... DNR and wildlife guys do it all of the time. If you do that, take and burn it slow and have a disk on the back of a tractor to turn down and out if it starts to go how you don't want, so doesn't get out of control. The drain plug on a 100 or 200 gallon (others too) Agstar horse troff are the same as garden hoses - toss one in the back of your truck, fill it with water, have the wife drive slow as you wet the outline with a hose as or before you burn. In any event, saftey first. Just be awfully careful, it takes work to do it safely.

Good luck Allan.

Mark

I don't mind plowing...

Don't light a backfire with the operations going on around there.

They may huff and puff and threaten as much as they like about a "mandatory" evacuation, but unless Nebraska has stricter laws than most of the country...they can't actually put you in handcuffs over it. Well, maybe if you're acting irrationally they can put you in pyschiatric evaluation...however, the bar for that is higher then just making an informed decision to stay and defend your property.

Light the fire and you'll be whisked away quicker than you can say reckless endangerment.

With the firefighters / law enforcement / etc operating near there and they'll let a judge figure out later if the activities where sufficient to contain what you had lit.

Yeah, I suppose you're right. Probably would go to jail for sure. Didn't think about that part of it. Guess that's why I aint the mayor.

I don't particularly like the idea myself under the conditions, that's why I said be ready with a disc after plowed. A disc can tear it up pretty good and quick. That's why I also mentioned the horse troff in the back of the pickup bed too, to wet the edges before lit a "hopefully" managable burn within the ring, and only the ring.

The whole thing's scary, but under the circumstances, desperation can lead to some hopefully managable manuevring. If it came down to that to save the house...yep, might've gone to jail or the shrink unintentionally. "Insane? Me? Well no Sir, I didn't think so at the time...real sorry about that too".

Haven't replied to any of your other posts, but this one's to say stay safe. Just remember, you won't be able to outrun it if the wind switches. Time to hook up the disk and start making rounds.
Be safe,
JohnDeereGreen

Hi Allan , That one looks like it's comming right at you . Years ago when I lived in Colorado we were evacuated ( we stayed ) due to a fire . The wind changed just as it got to the ridge above our place and the fire died out . It was less than a quarter mile from us . That one got me a little nervous ! It wasn't as big as the one in the picture . It only burned a couple hundred acres . I realized that tree fires are nothing to joke with ! A dry pine will burn in seconds . It got so hot we could feel it and a few of the tree trunks exploded from the heat . Wind and geograghy both worked for us our case . Be VERY careful if that is in fact coming your way . You won't outrun it at the last minute . Take care ...Randy

Hi Randy,

Yes, that picture was taken last night about dusk up the road about 4 miles.

The fire that really has us concerned is just over the ridge about 200 yards away.

They've put it out 3 or 4 times now. I called it in again this morning about 6am. Darned wind came up and it looked like it was gonna eat one of our houses.

I'm not supposed to be here; they've thrown me out 3 times now. The place is all evacuated and people are gone to the shelters.

Glad I was here tho. In about 10 minutes, here came the helicopters again.

Allan

Well our crops are gone. But we haven't been burned out of our home yet . Thank God. I can not imagine South Dakota will have any corn any where in the state this year unless irrigated. I'm now concerned how the ethanol plants will survive without corn.

I think you're just sending the heat our way, Allen...

90s and going up until Wednesday when their predicting 102 with a heat index around 115 factoring in the humidity. At least our heat doesn't contribute to wildfires due to the humidity.

Hoping for the best for you and your situation out there! Stay Safe!

Allan,

I stay away from the computer a day and you get in trouble! Seriously, I second the motion of the other guys about safety first. Would it help in your situation to have a tractor hitched to a disk to make a firebreak if needed?

Wish I had the rain to send your way. If it keeps being dry here like it is where you are we may have the same problem also. Also bet the heat from the fires aren't helping it cool down up there either
