Planning on driving my SUV from Mn to Ft. Campbell to meet son returning from Iraq in Sept. Is there a reasonable alternative route to go from I90/39 to I39 south without going through all the tolling delays in the short section near Rockford. Thanks ahead of time for any suggestions. This is the worst part of the trip!

US 218 to I 380. At the south end of I 380 take Iowa 27 then MO 27 to US 61. There will be a few stop lights in Hannibal MO, then interstate quality road (but with local cross roads, though no stops) to I-70. Cross over the Mississippi at St. Louis using I-270 or Louisiana and take interstates in Illinois to western KY. Or go around St. Louis on I-255 and take I-55 to Cape Girardeau and cross there to get to Kentucky.

The I-35, US 18, I-380 /IA/MO 27 US 61 route is solid from MSP to St. Louis, called the Avenue of the Saints. No tolls.

Don't try to pass St. Louis close by between 4 and 7 PM or 7 and 9 AM. Their interstates turn into parking lots during those hours.

I just went through that area. On the way south, you should be OK hitting the one toll booth just south of the Wisconsin line. On the way back, DO NOT go through that toll booth heading north. You will most likely have at least a 1 hour delay waiting to clear that construction mess. I would get off I-39 south of Rockford and take Hwy 51 up to Beloit Wisconsin and then get back on I-90/I-39. Have fun.

I-39 sounds good and I remember just one toll booth from a couple of years ago. You go through some really good farmland in northern and central Ill. There're some of those bright yellow tractors down here too.

Follow the Mississippi if you are looking for a scenic route (Hwy61). Depending on where you are starting from in MN, you could go thru Rochester, then take HWY 52 south to Dubuque, then follow the road (I don't know the name of it) that goes east (across the river), the road goes right to Rockford. I have gone that way myself, but I think the Interstate is a lot faster. I don't know where your final destination is (Fort Campbell), never been there. BUt if it is near Rockford, and not as far as Chicago, I would go The interstate. Have a safe trip, and remember in Wisconsin, 70 means no more than 75. JohnG

if you come thru dubuque ia take rt 35 in east dubuque il ? unless this has been changed in 2 or 3 years this road is at end of bridge makes a hard right will go back under east end of bridge ramp go to wi 11 east to monroe wi take wi 69 south becomes il 26 to rt 20 to i 39 miss all the messing around on il 20 from miss river to freeport . locals call rt 20 killer highway for good reason can count on bunch of travlers gitting killed on that road every summer .
locals use other roads if we can avoid rt 20

MMRTI:

Where are you starting from? If far enough west, how about coming down through eastern Iowa?

Either drop south befor you ever get near Chicago Or else just plan to breeze through in the wee hours or the morning.

You could use mapquest, or yahoo maps, or google maps. All three of those give you the option to enter your starting point, and your destination, and then it will come up with driving directions for, which you can then print out and take with you. The big problem I have found with ALL of those is that they don"t seem to be aware of ANY roads other than interstate highways. They will even direct you many miles out of your way just to have you travel on an interstate. Your best option is to do it the old fashioned way, get yourself a Rand-McNally road atlas and map out yur own route. Just because a highway is not a four lane divided super highway does not mean it is not a good road. I have found that most of the time the rural, two lane highways will get you there just as quick, if not quicker, with a whole bunch less hassles and snarly traffic to contend with.

Mapquest defaults to shortest time, which usually is the interstates. If you look at the top of the directions, there is a link to give you the shortest distance.

Don't know about that, the last time I tried to use map quest, I already knew the shortest route was going to be U.S. 34 across Iowa. Map quest must think that U.S. 34 ends at the junction with I-35, because it insisted on routing me north to Des Moines, and then east on I-80 until I was somewhere in eastern Iowa, and then take me back south to the town I needed to go to, which was about one mile north of U.S. 34.
