If it ain't one thing, it's another.

Just spent this side of $700 getting this head redone. New everything down to and including the darned keepers.

Start it up and it runs perfect until it starts to warm up. In about a minte, it goes to missing on one cylinder, then two, then three, then she just flat dies.

Doggone valves are hanging open in the guides. Head has gotta come back off of there.

This just about makes my day. :>(

Do those engines use sodium filled valves on the exhausts? Did they get replaced?
I guess I always thought that bronze guides were the best for heat dispersing.
Good Luck w/ your projects.

Did they knurl the guides? FIL used to be service manager at a Chevrolet dealership for about 30 years. He alway insisted the valve guides be knurled

Guess ya gonna have to pull the head. it’s the machine shops problem now. ‘bout the only thing that would be a fought on your end is if their were no oil on the stems to cool the valve stem. Oil does not have to lube the guide but has to take a way heat that is generated in the combustion chamber and transmitted to the vale and stem. Once a valve sticks cause of a clearance issue no amount of oil is gonna relive it. Its gonna have to have to be sized correct or you will fight it till he!! free'izz over.

I had that happen on a car engine several years ago. Don't remember exactly what we did, but we didn't tear it back down. Some kind of oil additive maybe?

Does it have those little umbrellas on the valve stems? Maybe pry them up and squirt some oil in underneath them?

Yeah,

Never even thought of it, but I should have insisted that he use cast iron guides.

Had it happen to me once before also. Darned brass guides just seem to take a little more oil clearance.

I'll call that machine shop and see what he says.

Allan

Instead of oil you might try some tranny fluid since its a lot thinner and seems to make stuck thing come unstuck. Just another idea to run with
