I have a Super 88 Oliver that ran great with the points.I decided to help it out this last winter and set the valves and upgrade to electronic ignition. Here came the problems! At first the tractor cranked and ran good, then it got hard to start, started spinning and spinning then finally started but still ran good. Then it got so bad the battery went bad so I replaced it with a 750 CCA battery but still wouldn't hit.I rebuilt the starter thinking it was drawing too much voltage from the Pertronix, didn't fixit but I did get it to start.Got it running and it did fine for about 5 minits then it died and never started again.Looked at everything in disgust and was just fixing to reinstall the points cause it ran for years before with them and all the sudden with the electronic ignition it was messing up.I decided to look at the electronic pick up so I took it out.It had a crack all around the black plastic module.I called CBS Performance where I got the Ignition and told them what happened and Gary said they had some problems in the past but he would send me another and he did.I put in the new one and the 88 runs strong without any problems starting or running now.My conclusion was # I had to make SURE I had a good ground system, mine wasn't good enough so I ran a cable from the battery to the starter and one to the frame.#2 the ignition was faulty from the getgo and had to be replaced. While using the Pertronix the wireing has to be in top notch shape or it can arch/flash searching for a ground and when this happens, boom the module is toast. This was my encounter and it was a pain in the a$$.Just wanted to share that with ya.I used four different Pertronix ignitions in the past in John Deere two cylinders with no problems at all.Maybe it is just a glitch in the 6 cylinder modules???Later Allen,Jack(TN).

Yep already been there done that a couple times over and the one time that cured me on there electronic ing. ystems was the day i was maken a pull at a local fair grounds and was going to show everybody just how well this barnyard engeneered monster would do in the 6500 Lb class came off the line in 4th hammer down and was make a BONZZI run down the track at twice the speed as the other tractors and had already past the best by 50 feet and was heading for the gate when POP BANG SPUTTER POP BANG she just died and the sled hit me in the back end and darn near threw me off the tractor I thought that i had done went and blew it up . Had to be pulled off the track and back to the truck got checking it out and it came down to the fact that she had lost spark i had the old points dist with me JUST INCASE that the new technoligy did not work and got it back up and running for the next class that set up went into the dumpster and i never looked back. Ran that tractor on the OLD POINTS SYSTEM WITH AND MSD BOX AND SUPER HOT COIL and never ever was beaten .

Well,

I can't "bad mouth" the electronic ignition. I really, really liked it while it was up and going. Just a smoother sounding, feeling, operating engine. Just plain "felt" nice.

However, after all the dust has settled, I just don't know if I can't put 'er back on there. When it goes "eyes closed", and I'm 35 miles from town and two days shipping time from another module, that translates into a major PITA.

Darnit! :>)

I like the advance I am able to run on the distributor as well as the gap I can run on the spark plugs(oh by the way they say run suppression core wires not copper core with the ignition). With the valve lash perfect and the advanced timing, the added fuel mixture I am able to run a much bigger spark plug gap she sounds and pulls better.Don't know what the horsepower is now but before all the upgrades it was 65 at 540 pto on our dyno.I took out the live pto for weight loss(gettin another class)and can't dyno it anymore. However I can pull one class heavier(500lb increments)in second gear than I could last season before I done any of this so I know it's better than it was.I stuck a test light in a plug wire and had it about 1/2 inch from the alternator and spun it over and I wished you could have seen that spark(big long BLUE arch)!Put it this way I don't want to be hit by it.Later,Jack(TN).

Jack,

I've thought about this all darned night; couldn't sleep it was botherin' me so darned bad.

And, I "guessed" at the same thing you're saying.

The machine shop gave this head a real good painting; I didn't bother to clean any of the surface off where there could be an electrical connection. Then, here I come along and am trying to start the tractor with only the essentials hooked back up. Dash is all loose, sheet metal and cowling flopping in the breeze, etc., etc.

I would imagine that the big cure cooked the little guy 'cause that dude never missed a beat and would always start in an eye-blink before.

The module isn't cracked, however it only throws one spark when I hit the starter and one spark when I release the starter. No rotational "pickup" whatsoever.

Yep, I think ya nailed it on the grounding issue.

Thanks Buddy,

Allan

It does all sound familar again Jak. We use to run pertronix (not called that back then) on lots of irrigation engines at one time but I never liked them because you had to have a good battery and alternator and a thief could drive by to steal those so went to running mags instead. Yep, bad wiring, bad ground, chewed up wires by cattle and poor battery can fry those things.

The 88 was starting every time for the two years I had it pryor to the electric ign.Totally rewired all the previous tractors with the Pretronix but not this one,it ran and operated so good I didn't mess with it.With the new ignition installed I found weak points in my old wireing.Jack
