Hello all --

Like a lot of you on this site, I keep an eye on the eBay listings, and make bids every now and then, and sometimes purchase some interesting old "junk." (After all, "One man's trash is another man's treasure.")

I won the bid for an unusual old spark plug earlier this week (final bid was around $15), and when I got the invoice from the seller, he wanted $9.20 to ship it via Priority Mail.

I wrote back and asked if he would ship it Parcel Post, since I've had spark plugs shipped for as little as $1.35 on a couple of occasions, but he said that he would only ship it Priority.

OK, fine. I wrote back again and asked for an explanation of the $9.20 for Priority, since the Postal Service's website tells us that you can send up to 2 pounds Priority for $4.05. Even if you add Delivery Confirmation (50 cents) and a small "handling fee" (if you feel you must), you should still be able to ship that plug for around 5 bucks.

Well, he refused to budge, saying that the shipping calculator on the auction listing page gave anyone who entered their ZIP code the same rate to ship the item, $9.20. If they thought that was too high, they shouldn't bid.

Well, guys, in all honesty I never checked the shipping calculator, because when I saw that the item would ship Priority I knew that it would be well under the 2-pound minimum rate, and would easily go for $4.05 base rate.

(As an aside, I can ship nine pounds via Priority Mail for $8.35. Nine pounds for eight thirty-five! And a spark plug weighs what, a few ounces? Should I have checked with the seller to see if this was a nine-pound spark plug?)

So, what are your opinions? Is the guy being unreasonable? Or am I? Should I just shut up and pay the inflated rate? A few bucks isn't going to break the bank, but it really is the principle here. It galls me to think of paying more than double the actual shiping cost.

I strive to deal honestly and fairly with everybody, and I expect the same from them. In this matter, I don't feel that this is the case.

I welcome everybody's thoughts and opinions. Tell me what you think, and be brutal, if you must.

Thanks, Geo. D.

I would tell him you might note in the possible negative feedback you leave that he charges excessive shipping,he could back down, however if it comes to that you can count on him countering with negative for you also.Best I think might be pay and leave no feedback or positive feedback with a zinger like Good item shipping high.If you give him a negative you will surely get the same. They often have high shipping so it pays to check.Keep the communication going a bit.

I had it happen on a service manual for my tractor. I didn't pay close enough attention to the fine print on the auction. $10 dollar item, $15 shipping. I bit the bullet and paid it. These guys need to be hung by the balls with piano wire!

Oh...we are never too old to learn are we? Just pay your bills, and chalk it up to experience. If you have done much buying on eBay, you should know that you have to play by the seller's rules.

I had a guy pull that stunt on a the trunk letters that read "Caprice Classic" on my roomates car. We won the bid for a buck, and then its 10 to ship it. Its how they make money on low dollar items. More or less pay the man, and pay attention next time.

""Well, guys, in all honesty I never checked the shipping calculator,""
Just pay the man and be done with it, and check the shipping calculator next time. I hate it when I send US postal money order and receive nothing.

George:
Sad as it sounds, you've made the mistake of assuming that everyone is as fair-minded as you are. Assume the opposite and simply confirm/settle all the details before agreeing to purchase.
At the suggestion of others on the Ford list, I ordered an 8N manual from "one of the trusted sellers listed on the left column." The manual was 10 dollars, the seller charged another 10 for "minimum shipping charge." So, exactly 20 dollars. (Like you, I assumed he would charge a reasonable shipping charge.) I'll never use that seller again, and have warned others away from him.

Aloha, I bought many items on Ebay and always check on the shipping methods and cost.I usually ask what kind of payment they will accept and take it from there. I came across many items with high shipping costs and sent them an Email to see if something could be worked out and if not, find another one.

NEGATIVE FEEDBACK! Use really negative feedback terms to discribe your displeasure at gouging.

1. Pay the man.

2. Report the excess shipping charge to ebay.

They have a new policy where they are cracking down on gouging by sellers. This probably isn't enough to get him in trouble, but it's worth a try.

That new eBay policy was created by eBay to get rid of the sellers that are avoiding eBays high fees. eBay really doesn't care if a seller overcharges for shipping, but if you do, eBay wants a percentage of it.

I agree with most of the other post. Pay the man. I buy stuff on occasion also. Once there was an Item that had a shipping charge of $110 on it. I e-mailed and got no responce from the seller so I never bid. By the way I had already purchased the same item a few times before and never had to pay more then $25 to get it shipped so I was just trying to find out if it was a misprint. Since I got no responce I didn't bid. After all it is an auction you bid you pay.

Personally, I'd like to see the listing. It'd help the conversation if you would post the number.

If he ships USPS flat-rate, it costs him $8.10. And he may well be doing that. I frequently do because I don't like dumpster diving for boxes and such. As well the cost of tape, the time it takes to package it all up, and running it to the post office (twice if I'm not flat rate shipping).

So personally, I don't see his shipping charges as necessarily being that off the wall.

I once sold a tractor on e-bay to a guy in Michigan. It was on his wife's account. Next thing is she e-mailed me and said he thougt the ad read "Southern Ohio" not Southern Oregon.
I e-mailed her back and said in reality, your husband now owns a tractor in Oregon.
I finally "settled" for the cost of the ad and the cost of listing the tractor again.
I also would not leave positive feedback, so I gave her neutral feedback.
A little mistake like not reading all of the ad can cost you a lot of money.
In your case, whether or not the shipping charges are inflated, you got off pretty lucky in my estimation.

You had every opportunity to know the shipping charges before you placed a bid and you didn't take that opportunity. It's your fault, not the sellers. Pay for the item and next time read everything in the listing.

I sell and buy items on Ebay, Allways check how much shipping is before you bid! If I was the seller I would ship the cheapest way possible, I see alot of over priced shipping on items, you just have to adjust your max bid on the item to compensate for the high priced shipping,

Id report him to ebay, they have a new policy about overcharging for shipping,it's not allowed.
I just got an email from ebay last week that said all sellers are supposed to charge only the actual shipping charge.I've seen $10 items with a $25 shipping fee.Dishonest sellers like ebay, they don't have to look you in the eye or talk to you.

Pay the man. Nest time read all the fine print. All ways look for the shipping charge. It is a common thing on E-bay to sell items for like 99 cents and then charge 20 dollars or even 30 dollars to ship. I know, pees me off too, but that is the way some do. Would you feel better is he charged you 1.20 shipping and 8 dollars "handling"?

Unfortunately you are Re: Need some eBay advice, g in reply to George D. , 08-11-2006 09:27:00
Unfortunately you are stuck paying the inflation.
This is a pet peeve of mine. Ebay allows sellers to charge a handling fee. Just as long as it seems to be resonable. On low priced Items this may seem just like price gouging. Unless he give up you have no choice to pay the cost. There also maybe good reasons for him to charge he fee, like he may have drive 10 mile to the post office. Now myself I think it unfair to charge for the act of shipping above the costs its like going to the grocery store and being asked $5.00 to pack your stuff in the bag, The sellers have to deal with the cost of doing business just like other businesses. But on the other hand they do have the fact that a lot of the stuff sells for pocket change and where else can the items be had so convenitly. Just pay the bill suck it up and move on sorry ;((

George, I learned a long time back not to bid on anything on Ebay without checking all shipping and handling fees. There are some sellers that inflate the costs to drive up their profits. Those I refuse to do business with. The rest that keep it reasonable get my business. I have a knife that cost me more than what it was worth by time I paid for the S&H but it is a good reminder of how some of them work.

A spark plug in a box might be under a pound but even a fraction of an oz over and it will be $4.50 add a couple bucks handling (which I never charge but a lot of guys do) you are at about $6.50. I don't see what y're bitchin' about.

"Deal Honestly" is a noble thought George - the problem is ebay harbors a whole lot of people looking to buy and resell for a profit what ever they can get their hooks on - and more times than not the shipping and "Handling" fee is the spot where as the profit portion of their venture is focused - as you can only charge so much for say a "Collector" Spoon from Mackinaw Island..... But who is to dictate what shipping and "Handling" cost's - they have to wrap it in a box and take it to the post office thats 3 (THREE) miles away!!!! (whew).....

An awful lot of people are gouging on shipping. But by the same token he may have to drive far to get to the post office to mail it and need gas money. If you don't like the shipping price DON'T BID. High shipping costs have stopped me from bidding very much on ebay. I try to figure the total price when I bid. Honor your deal and move on to the next one.

Unless you want negative feedback or worse from the seller, you must pay the man. The shipping cost does sound a little irregular.

Chalk it up to an ebay lesson learned.

A lot of sellers price stuff really low, then make up the differece with a big shipping charge. They are hoping folks snap up that whatever it is for a dollar, then find themselves committed to a $25 shipping fee.....

Always check the shipping....always. Even if eBay is changing the rules to only allow shipping charges of actual cost, then the sellers will have handling fees again, as they did in the past.

Consider yourself lucky, at least he isn't charge $20.
