I have a Berger instruments transit, level. Can I check to see if it is reading correct? We are sitting up cement forms in our new shed and when we started again this morning the transit was not level. The bubble was off to the left, but when I turned the transit one half turn, it was off to the right so I thought the bubble needed leveled and did ajust it .Now my readings are off I think, did I mess the transit up? We were getting about done with the grade, hope I dont have to start over, but will if I have to,to get it right. 75'x36'x8" THANKS for any help again!

4020,
If it"s thhe 3 screw type, you"ve just got to play with it to get the bubble centered.
If it"s the 4 screw, it depends on what you adjusted.
Did you adjust the vial with an adjusting pin or screwdriver, on the scope, or just the leveling thumb screws on the base? If you adjusted the vial, you will have problems. If it has 4 thumbscrews, turn the scope directly over one pair of adjusting screws and adjust until the bubble is level. Now turn it 1/4 turn over the other screws and level the bubble. Now turn it 180 degrees and see if your bubble is still centered. check it a couple times in all 4 directions over each set of screws. if the bubble remains centered, your all set. If you can"t keep it centered the vial needs adjustment. You do it the same way except you adjust the vial, only 1/2 way then readjust the leveling screw, then turn it 180 degrees and it should be close. You may have to do it several times to get it dead nuts.
Don"t shoot a benchmark with it not being leveled though, because as soon as you swing it WILL be out and your grade will be wrong. If you can"t get it in, you can always use the old garden hose trick with a short piece of clear hose on one end.
Good luck,

Smiley, Mine is the 4 screw type, and yes I adjusted everything. I don't know what happened, we had been using it on one side of the shed and then moved it to the other side, to get the transit out of the way which had us shooting the opposite direction. That's when the measurements got way off. We didn't think it was looking right. Using my transit, it showed my new Morton building was not level, I figured it probably was off. I gave up and borrowed my brothers transit and then when I checked the shed it seemed level, and my forms were all messed up. So we started all over from the beginning, it is looking a lot better. My transit is a Berger model 136. It is a contractors level, four thumbscrews,to adjust vial use allen wrench, there is also an a adjustment to move the scope up and down, I did not touch it. There are also a couple other adjusters I did not mess with. I did try to adjust the vial like you said, I still kept getting readings that did not match the shed. Since the borrowed transit matched the shed, I just used it. Thanks for the help everyone!

I see the 136 is a transit/level so the scope can be tilted. If it is locked on 0, it"s possible it has got dropped or whacked and may need to go to the factory for recalibration. As long as you have another level available and it"s showing OK, you should be all set.

The older levels had a 4 leg level setup that you have to level oneway, swing 90 and level again.3 legged can be leveled once and your ready. One old school trick to remember when settig up is whatever direction your left thumb goes,so does the bubble.good luck.

I also level the tripod before the transit/level goes on. Get your Benchmark (BM) on something that is not movable and shoot an "HI" (Height of Instument) off of that mark. No matter what happens to the transit, you can always get back to the benchmark and just add or subtract the original HI from the new one. Just keep track of where the BM is acording to your transit (HI) and you will be fine. It's not real complicated. Just write down what you see and keep track of where you've been. My BIL bought a rod that was in inches, instead tenths, thinking that it would be easier to use. Get the tenths and it will be simplier.

Just reset your grade stick off a known benchmark. Lasers, transits etc need to be moved and readjusted often on jobsites. Just make sure you have one constant benchmark with which to reset the grade stick daily. And check it often!!!
