I have noticed on the 4020 early model tractors the engine has these small holes all along the side of it. What were they used for? The later models seem to have done away with these holes. What were they for? Is the later model better off without them?
Do these holes cause problems?

They are "weep holes", loacted between the lower sleeve "O" ring that keeps the crankcase oil DOWN, and the upper sleeve "O" ring that keeps the engine coolant "UP" in the block.

If oil or coolant wept out, it was an indication one of the "O" rings was failing.

Over time, and experience with the engines, and PROBABLY better materials for the "O" rings, it was found the weep holes were unnecessary, and they were omitted in later engines.

IMHO, if the the sleeves and "O" rings in a given engine are in good shape, it does not matter one tiny bit if the engine has a block with or without the weep holes.

Some would "weep" like that for YEARS, with no ill effects.

If it really weeping a little boil, and not coolant, that would be the lesser of two evils.

Some folks, when overhauling these, would put a third "O" ring in the (normally empty) middle groove leading to the weephole, and some even seal the middle groove up with silcon rubber.

What the heck is wrong with this board!

I was SURE what I posted, even though factual, would stir up some other opinions!

Plus, "oil" became "boil", and no one "called" me on that...

"If it really weeping a little boil" SHOULD read "If it really weeping a little oil"...

Sorry about that!
