Ford 6.9 woes again

My tractor hauler didn't survive the heat wave last week! I think it poppd a head gasket inbetween the cyls,, its putting compression in the radiator and pushing the water out the overflow. It dont run hot,, just over pressures the radiator. Then, when i go to start it,, it locks up after 2 or 3 rotataions. Let it sit, and it will crank till the pressure builds up. Its in a 93 F-350 Ford Dually,, has a 6.9L IH in it,,, I know its supposed to have the 7.3,, but it dont. What year did they start putting roller cams in these engines? 87? 88? 89? Anyways, Im taking the heads off it to hopefully replace the gaskets. FUUUUUNNNNN!!! Greasy!! just venting,, Chad

In a '93 a 6.9 is most likely an earlier block that someone swapped for the 7.3. Pre-powerstroke 6.9's & 7.3's used the same block, and most of the external parts will interchange.

Check out www.thedieselstop.com. There's a couple guys on the pre-powerstroke boards that really know their stuff, or at least there used to be. Learned a lot when I first got my previous truck, a 1993 crew-cab dually, 7.3 with factory turbo.

I'd also tend to suspect cavitation putting a hole in one of the cylinders. Apparently these engines were know for doing that if the proper coolant additives weren't maintained.

I recommend you go to the bulletin boards for Powerstoke diesels (separate ones for the 7.3 the newer 6.9 ??) at the freeautoadvice.com site.

Lots of enthusiasts and Ford mechanics that know boat loads about those trucks.

If you're lucky it's a head gasket but don't rule out cavitation.
There could be a pin hole in a cylinder wall that will have the same result. The 6.9L and the early 7.3L diesels have a history of cavitation and it will require pulling the entire engine and having the block bored and sleeved in the effected cylinder.
To find out if it's a pin hole you need to remove the glow plugs and slowly turn the engine over by hand and check which cylinder the coolant comes out of the glow plug hole.
Remove that head and with the piston at the bottom of the stroke check the cylinder walls with a light and a mirror for a hole.
Note that trying to start this engine with a hydraulic lock will cause serious damage...stop trying.
Is there any coolant in the oil? Antifreeze is really bad for the rod and crank bearings.
I would not run it at all, none.
