coil gets hot

the coil on a super a gets very hot when tryiong to crankthe tractor. A 12 VOLT BATTERY, AND COIL. ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED.

keep in mind that a coil is a sealed container and can explode if hot enough. I have seen it happen. Be careful.

amo, if your coil is really????? ?? a 12 volt coil as you seem to imply, it shouldnt get hot and doesnt require any external ballast resistor HOWEVER if its a 6 volt coil (as I suspect) and you apply 12 volts, it will run so hot you can barely lay your hand on it and will eventually overheat.

NOTE if the coil is labeled something like "12 volts for use with external ballast" then its in reality a 6 volt coil and requires the use of a series external voltage dropping (12 to 6) ballast resistor wired after the ignition switch and before the coil. If it were a true full 12 volt rated coil (needs no ballast) it might be labeled "12 volts" or "12 volts NO external Ballast required"

If you measure the coils primary winding resistance (between its lil + and - terminals) you can tell if its a 6 or a 12 volt coil as the good Buick Man indicated, with around 1.5 ohms being a 6 volt but if closer to 3 0hms, a true full 12 volt coil.

Read any coil labels and measure its primary winding resistance and if its a 6 volt coil, go to NAPA or Central Tractor or Rural King or Tractor Supply etc etc and buy an external Ignition Ballast Resistor, they are aorund 1.5 to 1.85 ohms or so and wire it ahead of the coil in series with the feed down from the ignition switch.

A NAPA part # IC14SB coil does NOT need an external ballast resistor, and is reasonably priced.

Keep banging that stick and rock together... I think the issue with the IC14SB is the most commonly posted about 12v coil on all of YTmag.. and still people do not get the fact that it is a true 3-ohm primary coil..e tc.

Sounds like you have an external resister coil without a resister. Most coils run on 6 volts even in a 12 volt vehicle. Coils that do not use an external resister have one built inside them. You can get a ceramic step down resister at any auto parts store.

Is the coil 1.5 or 3.0 ohm? Is there a ballast resitor?
