Good Morning You Guys!

Thought I'd share my latest project with ya.

This old farm I bought has 30 acres running right down thru the middle of it that hasn't been farmed since the dirty 30's. Some of it hasn't ever been turned and still has the old buffalo wallers in it.

I see no reason why this land shouldn't be able to produce wheat, so I've decided to take it away from the rattlesnakes. Spent the last two days pullin' prairie hay off it and as soon as it drys up out there (rained last night) I'm gonna get after it.

This should be fun; I've recaptured a heck of a lot worse ground in my day. :>)

I think a "buffalo waller" (wallow) is a low place, that gets wetter than the surrounding ground. Probably the buffalo used to lay in it to escape the summer heat--sorta like the hippos do in Africky, i seen on National Geographics, i think it was. Here in the East, they are called "wetlands" and you'd better not plow them or fill them, or the govmint cops will haul ya into jail pronto! A farmer in central Pa. filled in one of them so he could land his ultra-light plane in his field. WRONG!! He's been in jail for quite a spell! That happened 10 or more years ago--he might be out now, haven't heard!

That's interesting that there is still that much virgin soil out there. Here in Iowa there is very little virgin soil left other than a few building sites and timber. Around here if you can find some virgin soil it is usually the most mellow soil we can find and that's what we are trying to get back to with no-till but I understand that won't work in alot of areas or crops.

The old buffalo wallers might have historical protection.

Well,

I tried that ploy with my wife concerning that old house out there that she is in the middle of remodeling.

Didn't work. :>(

I remember back in the '70's opening up some new prarie for irrigation out by Imperial, NE that had never been tilled ever. I was using some kind of chisel with a jd 4430 and I remember the front of that tractor raising up like a horse on its back feet.

Yep, same way here.

Don't think people believe me when I tell 'em how hard it pulls. Ground that has never been tilled just don't wanna change it's ways. :>)

Allan, this is one time I will give you permision to use a plow. Hope those red tractors have enough horses. Just don't let me see you killing that tree. To those of you from other parts...trees are so scarse here that if one dies. we sit and cry. I once planted about 20 reees..then got 20 dogs to water them. Kennyp

No Sir!

All trees stay! Only thing that will be removed is that darned broken down Hydro 70; that's the little black spec settin' between the two trees. :>)

We got a nice heavy rain last night. Thinking very seriously about hittin' it with a disc this afternoon and see how it goes. Pretty tough pullin' real estate out there. :>)

I saw a big black bear here saturday morning and they are not native to my area, only to the far east and west. I guess something scared him to migrate to new ground. If you happen to see a rattlesnake or buffloe get picture posted for us, there are none of them around here either. Looks kinda dry out there.

Yes Sir,

It was awfully dry all summer. However, the rains are coming now and we should be in good shape for planting time around the middle of September.

Still have my fingers crossed, but it kinda looks like I might have to cut alfalfa again here before long too.

Ya never know in this country; sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. :>)

Allan, we been lucky with the rain through here. Row crop farming, tobacco, corn, wheat, peanuts, soybeans. Hardly any cattle or hay, mainly baled wheat straw. Got another thunder boomer last night about 2:30am. Looks like you could use one of those tractors with the cab and a/c. Mighty nice when it gets about 90 degrees.
