Dad ended up in the hospitol this week. Doctor says that he needs a defibulator installed. He is 72 and in pretty good shape otherwise. But doc says his heart is weak and getting worse. Have any of you all had any exsperiance with a defibulator? Good or bad?

I had my ICD for almost 5 yrs now. Only using the defibulator side. Like Coloken said have mine checked every 6 months also. Told me not to do any welding or go near any high voltage generators or Batterys. So far I havn't had any episodes with it. My neighbor had to have his replaced after having it about 5 or 6 yrs said he kept hearing a fant beeping noise coming from his chest area. So he thought he better see a doctor and the said his battery was getting low. He asked what the battery's cost. "$36,000" Owch thats a shock by itself.

Guess if you have a week heart your a prime candidate for one. I really did'nt want one but it's there to help shock your heart in case if it was to stop. So far I had no bad experiences. Glad to hear your dad doing ok.

Mike

Careful how high they set the heart rate as those old heart muscles just can't take the new rate very well.

Kinda like putting a new brand new dual quad carb system on and old engine and then flooring it.

We just discovered a recent law change in Michigan. It seems that IF a pacemaker with a defib is implanted, you permanently have your drivers license taken away by the Secretary of State. I don't know much about this, and am not sure how they would find out, but it is definately something to check into. Supposedly the ones already in place are grandfathered so are not affected. This would apply to any new implants.

I am not 100% sure, but were advised of that. Prior to my Dad's surgery, we did change his paperwork to include the statement to NOT install a pacemaker with a defib. if a pacemaker was needed.

What a rotten, unneeded law, are you sure? Person with a defibulator is no more dangerous that one with a bad heart and no defibulator.

In Ohio insurance does not have to pay if you have a heart attack and pass out and crash into someone, sort of an "act of God" thing. So unless they change the law so that the insurance company of someone who has a medical condition and causes an accident has to pay for damages, (and I don't mean millions in negligence unless they KNEW they should'nt drive) I think it's a good law that people with certain conditions can't drive.

Oh yea...Tell him to not lean over the alternator in the car and stay away from the arc welder...Hardly any thing else to worry about.

YEP! ICD. Pacemaker and defib all in one. Had mine in 2 years and a half now. It just sets there in case I need it. They check the batteries about every 6 months. When I go to bed, I go to sleep and leave the worry to the machine. Best comfort blanket I ever had. If my brother had had one 10 years ago, he would not have died in his sleep..might still be here. Tell him to get it in as fast as he can, then relax and injoy life.
