hi, i'm new to haymaking and i wanna plant about 4 acres to start with this fall. the field i plan to use is currently sweet corn that will be harvested this week. i have some quistions about what i need to do.
do i need to plow it first or can i just go over it with the harrows until it looks good?
when is the best time to plant?
can i do it with a broadcast spreader or will i have to barrow a seeder? also what brand of seed is a good kind?
thanks, joe

I am with Joe on this. Plow and then disk, harrow and get your ground worked smooth. I would drag chains or a 4x4 behind my alfalfa seeder. Sure got a good stand ast time.

Where ya at? What kind of soil? What are you planning to plant??(alfalfa grass clover mix)

I'd plow to get rid of those stalks. I like a clean field(I had some problems with left over straw on one field). Plow, disk, cultipack...

Some broadcast, I drill though last couple of fields I took the tubes off so it would just fall to the ground. I have drug a log chain behind to cover, and then I haven't. Couldn't tell much difference.

Might be getting late for alfalfa depnding on your area.
