Can I haul this 1466 IH tractor on this trailer 425 miles if I yank all the weights, 'er am I pushin' it just a little?

She's a tired one, but I might be able to buy it right.

Thanks,

Allan

Allan for less than 6000.00 you could purchase a nice used high HP single axle over the road tractor ,then you could find a used drop deck and this would still be cheaper than the rig you have pictured here .

We hauled a Case 2390 about 120 miles two years ago behind a 3/4 ton Chevy with no problems BUT it was a much heavier trailer. Tandem with duals. It had so much stopping power with the controller only halfway turned up it would stop just a good as if you didn't have a trailer at all. When we first loaded and headed out I had it almost all the way up and that trailer locked up all the tires! I would look for another means of getting it home personally and I get somewhat crazy at times!

Just drive it ! Those Farmalls have fast road gears. A guy in Ohio drove a JD A all the way to Alaska so 425 miles should be a piece of cake.

Back when they were still leveling land in western nebraska in the early '70's I drove a jd scraper landlever on hiway 6 from Hastings to the colorado state line. I was only about 16 yo at the time. As I remember it took at least two days.

Hey Allan, give Gary over in Bridgeport a call, I saw in Fastline he has a 1466 that I think said it needs a T/A. Even if it"s a touch more expensive, frieght costs will be a lot less...

Allen, I would be wary of the limitations of your truck. If you are going down 385 through Julesburg, Holyoke, and Wray I think the big rigs would blow you off the road. See if you can get a heavier duty truck and trailer.

Hi Billy,

The thing is setting straight down in the southern part of Colorado.

Darned old tractor has "issues" and the freight is just the beginning of the ordeal. Needs a hydraulic pump for sure, maybe a T/A and probably an engine O/H too.

But, if it all shakes out, I think I might be able to buy it fairly reasonable. Just have to wait and see what develops.

Allen ya know what i tell ya is correct. Ain't know way that even i would do that . Even if ya strip all the iron off and make that the next load you ain't got enough truck or trailer . And don't go by what they call shippen weight on a tractor as it is plum wrong . I brought a 1486 home one time from the Ill. line now i will grant ya i did not strip it down as it had three sets of Donuts on the inside and three sets on the outside along wiht a full rack on the ft. and loaded 20.8's on the back with a set of 20.8 duals on heavy rims and i loaded this on my 28 foot tandem dual gooseneck pulled by a 88 Ford F350 dualy 4X4 with a 460 5 gears and i want to tell ya that was a weeeee eeeee eeee bit more then i should have had on as i am telling ya it pulled harder then the 1066 and 806 that i brought out of there a couple years before in one load . I should have taken my buddys semi and step deck for that one .

Allan, my way of thinkin would be to have seller contact implement dealer in his area and get prices to haul it. They are used to doing it. I've hauled things with a 3 axle trailer and ended up with wrecker finishing the job. Big $$$ when you are 2-3 hundred miles from home.

You could put another axle on the back of the two axle with brakes. But you should use a 1 ton with duals. I use to haul up to 18,000 on a goose neck with triples but have had blow outs on the rear of my 78 chev 3/4 ton. This makes a very dangerous situation in trying to get off the highway.

have the tractor trucked home. you may save money by hualing it home, but if you get pulled over my the state patrol or sheriff, or get in to an accident, you will have lost a lot more than what it would have cost to have it trucked home.

have it trucked to your local dealership, and then drive it home from there, if it is drivable. or keep looking, you may find somthing that is in better shape closer to home.

before you make up your mind, at least look into how much it would cost to have it trucked that distance.

Allan, Come on, Now!.... 2, 7500k lb axles - the wt of the trailer. Now + the wt of the tractor + cab and AC conpoenents, + cast wt and you are too short on trailer. May 20 miles or so but not 425.
Go....Beg, Borrow, or Steal ,Something like your trailer with 10K or 12K axles w/ duals on each axle, then set the tractor just enough forward to set the backend down an inch or two. Then it will work.
Though your truck will be the only shortspot I see then. Yes, under shod, and under braked But it will work. Just watch you Ps & Qs Pick your roads, and times to avoid major trafic and such. just BE CAREFUL ol Friend!!!!
Later,
John A.
PS....I brought my 966 home from 350 miles away on a tandem axle w/ 12K axle trailes, My weak link was my 82, 3/4ton, 4x4, gas. it was an old light duty rig not HD like yours. Mine would only run 55 or so with that load. And my pickup was the only thing with brakes....Yes Not again like that. jas.

Please allow me to share some expertise on this subject. Take it as you will but please listen.

I have read all these posts. Some are good. Some are scary. A bigger trailer won't do you any good. you don't have enough truck to pull it. The problems I have seen many times these past years is primarily caused by pickups that are overpowered for what they are. Sure these big diesel engines turn pickups into pulling monsters. But in the end, you still only have a pickup. Accidents don't happen because you don't have the power to get going. They happen because you can't get stopped.

Sure your pickup could drag this tractor down the road. But suppose someone cuts in front of you and hits the brakes. Happens to me all the time. You swerve to miss them and the weight of your load pushes the pickup out of control. Or you are going along fine on the highway and you blow a tire, either on the pickup or trailer. The load will drag you all over.

Electric trailer brakes are swell on dry pavement when you are going straight. but on wet roads they lose a great deal of performance.

So do as you wish. But personally, I have seen too many overloaded pickups in some nasty crashes.

Fred, Not to get in an argument here, But you really didn't read my post.
My first ?s to you is what are you haulin, hauling it on and pulling it with what, and how often? I simply say...There is no reason a trailer w/ 12K axles w/ brakes hooked to a the tow vehiele, like Allans shouldn't be able to preforn this job, if Allan or anyone else with good driveing skills wanted to do this.
It would be well within the pickup and trailers capability. No one can predict idiots on the roadway, or equipment failure, so one has to be doubly causious. Do not drive like an Drunk Indian and see how fast the truck will pull the load, Yes avoid major citys, rush hour traffic and the like.
We all have to work with in the frame work of our capabilities, and equipment.
Back to Allans ? He asked if we thought it would make this trip and it has been an overwhelming NO.
I simply added my thoughts that his HD Ford with the right triler would do the job.
This country was built on the back of the 1/2 ton pickup. At least now that truck for the most part has been relegated to town folks. Most of us have in our repitau a 3/4 4x4 to work out of now.
It is Allans opition to do what I or any one else sujected or Not! He might pick up the phone and get some guy with a W900 Kenworth, with a 450 Cat under the hood and a single stick 18 speed, on 3:70 Rockwells w/ a 50 ft lowboy trailer behind it to haul this tractor home at the $3.00/mile going rate.
I have been around enough farmers/ranchers/hotshoters and hauled enough to know what is possible or not. I, and just stateing my thoughts and opinions on this topic that is all. Take care Fred we'll visit another day.
Later,
John A.

Boy Allan, you are willing to risk it all if you put that tractor on that trailer behind that truck. I hauled home my 1468 with cab and the duals were stacked on the front part of the trailer and 23 100 pound suitcase weights besides and I was plain stupid for hauling that thing about 300 miles in a light rain. This was using a 2004 Duramax with 25000 pound gooseneck tandem axle trailer with two 12k axles under it. Oh I could move it ok but thinking back on it I could never have stopped it in a hurry if need be. We had a 1466 back in Iowa and you will never run out of power but you won't keep you're hearing very long and you may need a back massage at the end of the day. migraine

Aww heck Allen, just jump on it and drive it home. I calculated it would take you about 21hrs and 15 minutes to drive it 425 miles, and thats with no stops. While your opening your wallet, you can upgrade to a F550 and a 25,000lb GVW trailer, I figgure your probably going to need it for dragging it arond the countryside to tractor pulls after you get it home and rebuilt, and get about 4,000-5000lbs of extra suitcase weights on there.

We have hauled a 4020 with loader, fluid in tires, and cast weights on our trailer.

Neighbor has a tandem axle gooseneck and hauls his 1486 w/loader all the time.

Our gooseneck tandem axle is rated for 17,000 pounds...

Go for it, just use common sense!

Your truck is only rated to pull 10,000 pounds. It would do it prolly, but it would be overloaded and tough to handle if you got in a bad situation.

FWIW, I pull my own construction equipment everyday and know only too well what it feels like when things get out of control.

In a younger day, I would do it in a bheartbeat. Now that I'm older and wiser, no way.

I wish my cousin was still around I would get him to talk you out of this hauling trip. About 2 years ago he bought a 1466 in Iowa and left out to go pick it up.The truck and trailer was also a match to your rig.He didn't make it home. The tractor overloaded the rig and he lost control of it and lost his life.Hope you don't try it.But,if you do I will pray for your safe return.Just my 2 cents worth.

I'm not one to shy away from overloading a trailer and truck but the speed always has to be decreased to match the overload. I think with that tractor on there it will take almost as long as just driving the tractor.
