I just purchased a Ford 850. I know this is 1954-57. The serial number on the left side of the engine, rear of the starter is 850 with 2112438 below it. Is this the serial number? Appears too long for the Serial Number chart. Thank you.

As John said, there are other ways to zero in on the age of a Ford tractor. One way is to find date codes on various parts of the tractor. This photo shows the date code on the right rear axle of my 850. The G stands for July (G being the 7th letter of the alphabet). The 5 on the end means 1955. The 22 in the middle means the 22nd of the month, so this axle was cast on July 22, 1955. My other axle says G255 so it was cast 3 days later. Sometimes these codes are upside down.

That is the #'s now lets see how you could be reading it or it is stamped wrong.

1) are you sure it does not say (Diamond)112438
This would be a 1956 and the diamond stands for cast-iron cylinder sleeves.

2) if you are sure it says 2112438 it is stamped wrong. Most likely a tractor built on a monday morning or a friday afternoon.

There are other ways of figuring the year but this board moves to fast for that. If you are still having problems post your question on the Ford board of this site and we may beable to help you as that board moves a lot slower.
