Looking for info on these trucks. Whats the best years and motors to have? I am looking in the 10-20k price range. I know the dt466 is a good motor, but would I be better off with a cummins in the long run? What tranmission would you recommend? I will be pulling a 36ft enclosed gooseneck trailer. I would say 8-12k miles a year. Thanks any info would be appreciated!

I guess it depends on how quick you want to get there. Nothing wrong with a DT..... but you'll probably get a good bit more power from an L10 or M11. Transmissions... 9's 10's, 13's. They're all good. A 13 will cost more, and is more versatile. A 10 or super 10 would be good too. It's as much a matter of your own personal preference.
If it were me, I'd be looking for an old fleet spec highway tractor. They often have smallish engines (read fuel economy), and super 10 tranny's. They're out there cheap and in well maintained condition because the fleet maintenance is generally good... and nobody wants the trucks. 10 grand should get you a very good light tractor. Probably cost you less than a single axle, and not really much more to run. Just find something that fits what you want to do, and not be too hung up on the nameplate. I would stay with either a DT466 if you go that route, or in a larger truck, either a Cummins, Cat or Detroit engine. There's lots of Mercedes engines popping up now, and Volvo's, and probably some other Euro stuff... but watch out on them as they're not so widely supported, and probably a bit dearer to work on.... not that they aren't very good engines. There isn't too many places you can't come across either a Cummins or Cat shop. We've got one of each in town, and damn little else anymore. Good luck.

I think I will end up with a 7100 w/ the dt466 and a 10 speed transmission. I started to look around and you can get them pretty cheap with low miles. I found one with 125k for $8900. They seem to run under 10 grand for the early 90's. I wont be pulling much weight so I think this will work for me. Does anyone know what brand tranmission they used in the early 90's Internationals w/ dt466?

It's a pretty fair bet that any truck with a 10 speed, or any other heavy truck will have a Fuller/Eaton RoadRanger. If it has a 5, 6, or 7 speed, then it's probably a Spicer. Most heavy trucks have a RoadRanger. HTH.

Personally I would loook at a L-10 or M-11 cummins with a 9 or 10 speed .This would be my recomendations unless you were hauling light loads then I would probably go with a DT 466 with a 5/2 speed

Yeah wont be real heavy, trailers weights about 8,000 empty, haul 2 cars and some equipment, probably 15-18,000 pounds. I am just looking for some reliable. Thanks!
