has anyone had any experiance with those that are selling jap tractors by the container? i am a little wary of then, but perhaps these grey market tractors are a good deal. i inquired about 1, but they want to make me a dealer and sell me 8 or more.

If it says "Kioti" on the hood - RUN. They are royal POS! They have problems with cheap backhoes, loaders cracking, brakes, axles, hydraulics, and a host of others. Of the ones you mentioned, Mahindra is my choice. They have a long history of quaility machines. They tend to be a bit higher priced than the others, but well worth it. They have built tractors for Massey and IH in the past.

The Place I deal with alot, sells those Kiotes. Says they are really Nice machines. All come in FWD, are made or heavy cast Iron, No stamped Metal. Also they Have a 4 year Bumper to bumper warrenty. No I don't own one, But they sure looked and felt like a nice Machine. I just couldnt' afford one. This same place sells Cub Cadet,Lynar?(cheap chinese stuff) and Eicher. They sell alot of used stuff too. Mostly Fords , with a spinkling of JD, and Masseys
I just picked me up an Eicher 485 w/loader.
So far I'm liking this machine. I with I could have affored something with Shuttle shift. Digging with a collar shift is a pain in the Arse.
Time will tell if its a good machine or not. Tom

Nothing wrong with a grey market tractor purchase. Just a few things to be wary of, #1- the tractor will most probably be as least 20 years old. #2-(I cannot stress this enough) buy from a reputable dealer that has been in business for quite a while, no newbies, an established dealer will know which tractors have parts supply problems and also will be able to supply you with parts and service for your tractor. #3- RUN AWAY from one that has been "rebuilt" in Vietnam that shows a new pretty paint job and close to 0 hours.
Of course there is quite a bit of refurbishing done by reputable dealers when they get here fluids, filters, battery, seat, some do paint them as well but it's a running working tractor when it comes off the container. The Vietnam rebuilders get's the tractors that the Japan yards absolutely cannot sell to anyone else.

I looked at a bunch of smaller tractors this past spring at the farm progress show in Columbus, Oh. at the state fair grounds. Kubota, Mahindra, Kioti, Branson, and several others were on display. Overall, I was most impressed by the Kubotas of course, with Kioti being second and Mahindra at the bottom. I can't say how reliable they are, but judging by the sloppy castings, and overall fit and finish, the Mahindras just seemed cheaply made. Afterall, if you don't pay attention to details that can be seen, what do things look like that you can't see?

local guy bought a chinese tractor. Fonton brand 85 hp cab 4 wheel drive. He claims the same tractor in the kubota is 42000 and he paid 21000. He loves it. (this quote is from him not me. These chinese tractors will start making some inroads in the us tractor market.

If I could find a container load of real Kubotas I'd buy the whole thing.
Some of them other jobs like the that Mahindrance or whatever it is I wouldn't buy.

uLTRA,

You're confused.

Mahindra, of India, was formerly associated with IH. They build WONDERFUL tractors, still based on the old designs.

I think you mean to be wary of cheaply made chinese tractors!

Grey market by the container, were at one time, used jap tractors. Some were sent to Viet Nam where they were disasmbled and "rebuilt". Mostly with used parts. Hours showed zero. Not to be confused with the new China ones. The couple I saw ran pretty good. Parts could be a problem.

In general Japaneese tractors are very good. That includes grey market tractors, which are sold used, _not_ new. However Grey market may be very hard to find parts & service for here in the USA.

India and Korea make some ok tractors - a little cheaper, not quite as good as the Japaneese stuff.

It sounds like you are looking at China made tractors tho?????

They are cheap, & not worth that much. Junk. Made from poor castings, & poorly fitted, awkward controls.

Be sure you are looking at what you are describing. I was at a truckload sale - can't say the name now, H-----. They had some of those junk China tractors. Fellow claimed they were Kubota machines, or just like them. Yea, right! As if. Just a salesman's lie. The hyd lever would snap off in my hand; the hyd were leaking as it sat there; the castings were rough looking & could see poorly melted iron; the controls were placed in poor locations & cramped. That was _no_ Kubota machine, & it was no bargin at all.....

Grey Market, Japaneese, and China-made tractors are 3 different things, with different levels of quality & support.

So which are you looking at? :)

Last year, I struck up a conversation with a young couple at a traveling tool sale. They were in the process of buying one of the Chinese tractors.. When the salesman walked away to do something, I stepped in & talked them out of purchasing it... I convinced them that the same money would buy them a nice used tractor... I felt that I did a good deed, that day...

FarmerFred, I think you are referring to Chinese not "Jap" tractors. There are no cheap Japanese tractors. I think you need more information.
