Still having fuel problems

I posted last week about air entering the fuel system on my JD F935 mower. I put new fuel lines on thinking one may have been cracked, but it seems there is more air entering the system now...when I turn the fuel pump on to bleed the system, I can not purge the system of air. Loose clamp, maybe? Could the fuel line inside the tank be damaged? What stumps me, besides mechanics in general ; -), this is happening on both fuel tanks. Any other suggestions before I load her up and head to the dealer (and the bank to take out a loan to pay the dealer...)

I would look at fuel return hoses. The problem you describe of sucking air is typical of that era yanmar. In that it is a closed system this is the area of most concern, also due to engine heat hose becomes dry and does not seal as well. I agree with earlier post as to pressure checking fuel system. Sometimes though you still may not visually identify problem. It is not a bad idea to replace those return hoses anyway it might cost all of five dollars. The only other area to check would be filter.I have seen small cracks in the casting of filter head when tightend just a little too much, it happens. Good luck.

How about a hole in the pump diaphram? Pickup tube in the tank?

I wondered about the tube in the tank, but what are the chances of both tanks having an issue? May pull the tanks and replace the fuel lines inside...the fun continues...

You think the "dip tubes" in those little tanks are fun... the big 4-wheelers, 8630's and 8640's, etc., used to have trouble with the dip tubes in their big RH saddle tanks clogging or breaking off in the 80-to-100 gallon steel tanks. Now THAT was a LOT of tank to mess with!

I recommend using pressure to find the leak. Temporarily plug the vent in the cap with gorilla tape (or duct) then use a tire pump (not a compressor) to put modest pressure into the line at the other side of the filter. If fuel does not come out making the leak obvious, use a spray bottle of dish soap and water to spray down the system looking for leaks. JimN

Great idea! But, how do I connect the tire pump to get an air tight seal? Could I seal the fuel line with vise grips and insert a sports needle into the fuel line?

Apparently, you have an electric fuel pump. Are you aware they can fail, and not pump fuel, or not have enough pressure, even though you hear them "running".

Any chance that could be your problem?

I changed the fuel pump last spring when this problem started on the right tank. Then I realized the left tank worked fine and spent the summer mowing with just the left tank.

So.... there's a valve to select which tank it draws from? Electic or manual?

Spin on fuel filter? On my truck, I have to do more than hand tighten, otherwise I drop prime.

I would try tighten an extra 1/2 turn.

Also, does this have plastic lines that snap into place?

The fuel filter is "in line"..

Fuel hoses were clamped on with spring claps, I changed to screw hose clamps to get a snugger fit.

This thing has be baffled...shouldn't be this difficult. The leak has to be on the tank side of the fuel pump. With new lines, what else could be wrong?

One tank is full and the other is just over half. But, I wouldn't admit it if the tanks were empty...; -)
