Do you need front weights if you use a bushhog?

I've got a Farmall M with a 5 foot Woods bushhog on the back.

Do I need front weights on the tractor? Will the front wheels stay on the ground when I lift up the bushhog?

Gotta say up front that I know less than 'nuthin about an "M", but I bush-hogged for years with a 6' LandPride on the back of my little Ford 861 and never gave a thought to the front getting light. Bogged it down a few times, but never had a balance problem.

I have never had a problem with my M being too light with a mower. I don't use a top link though, just a heavy chain so if I hit a low spot with the back tires the top link or the mower does'nt catch all the weight. If I am mowing flat land behind the house I don't even put the chain on, just hook up to the lift arms with anti-sway bars.

A little safety tip for you. Put a toplink on. If you ever hit a stump or something solid the back of your head will be immediately introduced to your mower.

Well that all dependes on a lot of things how heavy the brush hog is and how much of a tractor ya got in ft. of it and the lay of the land . Back many moons ago like 1970 my buddy and i took a job mowen gas line wright away for Tennaco . We had a almost new 310 Case dozer with three point hitch and PTO we rented a 430 Case Diesel and the dealer also threw in a 340 International that had a side mount sickel bar hyd. driver and old township tractor we also rented three heavy duty Brush hog one 8 footer and two seven footers . The 430 had 500 lbs on the nose to start , nothing on the 340 or the dozer but the 7and a half foot blade . Now when they put in a gas line from Texas to Ny. they just draw a line on the map and go for it . my buddy and i hauled all the equipment down to the starting point on a Sunday so we could hit it hard on monday morning . Well at 7 am monday morning we meet the section boss and we started , me barly made one round and shut it down and went back and started scrounging up ft. weights even for the dozer . Well we welded on two IH ft bracked to the top of the blade on the dozer and put 2000 on the nose of it and a nother 1000 on the 430 . we learned that Industral rear tires that were on the 340 were not ment for the HILLS real fast as that is how you would come down the small hills with it so that tractor sat most of the time . We even had the Ft. tire on the 430 loaded along with loaded rear tire and extra weights on the rears . Now i want to tell ya that these littel hills were steep and there was not a day that went by while doing this job that ya did not put racing stripes in your dwars . Now if ya think that a dozer can't slid off a hill going stright up and stright down i am here to tell ya that it can and if ya don't believe me you can ask my buddy he rode it down one hill with the tracks locked up brush hog bouncing up made it look like and air boat . Now sliding off one of them hills was not too bad as long as ya could keep it stright , the bad part was the tareses that they cut across the side of the hills WITH A D 9 . You could get some seirous AIR under the tractor or dozer if ya started sliding . There were some hills on those 4 lines that we mowed that the 5 young guys that we hired to do the hand work around fences and stand pipes could not get there dirt bikes up and they would have to ride with either of us or walk . People would see us working a hill and bring there lawn chairs out and set and watch the show. by lunch time it was time to head to the Point Bar for some nerve medcine . Some days we could make real good time and others was spent fixen . Now i am here to tell ya that them older brush hog were built way heavier then the stuff ya get today and we still broke them . Ya would be mowen along real nice in what ya thought was just grass and WAMMMM the brush hog would jump and before the slip chutch could do it's job ya would snap the shaft and stump jumper off and the whole assambly would be layen there or ya would snap a u/joint then it was back to the truck and start fixen or ya would run a thorn appel thorn in a tire and Snakes lots of snakes some all in one pice and not to happy and some times in KIT form . What bothered me the most was that everyday the BUZZARDS that kept Flyen over head , was not sure that they were cleaning up after us or waiting for us to mess up. Now after doing that job 99% of what we farm around here is FLAT LAND.

I just went from a 5' Bush Hog Squealer to an older 6' Bush Hog with nearly 3x the metal in it, and my 560's front tires are a bit light at times, even with both front weights on. I pulled into the yard after bringing it home, stopped to talk in the dooryard, then took off for a field and immediately turned around for the front weights - you'll figure it out pretty quick if you are too light.

I have a 3 point hitch 7 foot Bush Hog Squealer that I hang off an IH 606 and a JD 2130. I"ve never had the front end of either tractor come off the ground going up hills and we"ve got some hills here in NY. Neither tractor has any weight on the front end.

You'll just have to give it a run and see how it acts for you.

My ol' chopper is one of the heaviest implements I've ever strapped on a 3-point because the darned thing sticks out so far in the back.

All depends on your lay of your land too depending upon if you are working on the level or vertical. :>(

So Allen you're saying the bush hog is heavier than the flip plow? Or you run the hog on one tractor and the plow on the big tractor.

Dunno,

Never weighed 'em, but that mower sure "seems" heavier when it is mounted.

I only have one tractor that will even come close to pulling that plow 'cause it is a 4-bottom and takes at least a 100 horse outfit.

Neither is nearly as heavy as this old 6-row cultivator tho.

Allan what are doing with that Lilliston cultivator and I thought you were drylanding? lol. We use to run those things for shaping beds when irrigating or cultivating cotton or working in treflan with them. Still got a bunch of the close working center hoes for them and no one wants those anymore. Took one to a auction and Mexico buyers threw off the center hoes leaving them laying on ground at auction yard and auctioneer said come pick them up so there they sit in junk pile now.

You'll be fine.
I've used my 5 footer on my Ford 2N and Farmall Super C and never had a problem--and I have hills. Lately I've been using it on my JD A and that's a whole different situation; the A's front end can get kind of light at times with the hog back there.

But you'll be OK with your M.

I pull a 6 thats heavier built than your 5 and I have no problems. If it bothers you just dont lift it as high.

The only time I have a problem with the front lifting is going up a hill lifting my mower and turning. when the front starts to come up I just drop my mower and front goes back down.I am using a MF 231 with a 6ft woods mower. I think your tractor would be heaver on the front. Just be careful. Stan

With that tractor you should be ok. Shoot I have seen 8N fords with a hog like that and they do ok and there front ends are lighter then your M is

Your right on old. I have a 9n with a 5 foot john deere brushog and have never had a front wheel come off the ground in ten years of mowing. His M will probably steer pretty nice with it on there I would think.
