Some of my older customers are saying we are going to have a long hard winter , due to the abundance of nuts on the trees. Sounds logical to me. These are different customers from different areas. One tree had so many nuts on it , two branches ripped off. Anyone else have any winter time weather predictions?

Hi All; Just got back from 3 week trip (vacation) with my bride (42 years). We seen those solid orange catapillars in WA/Or and have some almost solid here. Also lots of nuts. Leaves are turning fast. Snow over 5K most states we were in and less in some areas. Got back and found that I had 3.5 inchs (rain)on the farm while gone. May get something after all.Neighbors horses and cattle were all over the field. What would you do?? 3rd time I caught them. Bob

Plenty of moisture here in the Pacific Northwest. Just a hunch.

"If leaves fall early, Winter will be mild...if leaves fall late, Winter will be wild."
But, then on the other hand, I was at an auction yesterday and old buck saws were selling higher than normal...could be a sign of a long winter.

Oh that reminds me of a story. Man went to inquire of the old indian about the winter. Might be a bad on" says the indian. So white man goes home and cuts wood. This gets repeated several times over the next few weeks with the report turning worse each time and eventualy the man asks the old wise indian how he knows it will be such a bad winter, His relpy, "White man cut much wood"

The "old time" predictors in my area of New York -watch the Wooley-Bear caterpillars for the ratio of their color bars, and how early little animals start stashing their food, etc. Also how the fur looks on the local coons, muskrats, beaver, etc. I don't know if any of them have ever been right - and I don't buy the Farmer's Almanac. But, that being said - we've got Wooley-Bears all over the place that are almost all orange and no black - which I've never seen before. And - the mice, chipmunks, and flying squirrels have been going nuts stashing food - including the walls of our house - and various places in my trucks. I went to use my Ford diesel a few days ago - and once started - it barely ran and smoked like crazy. I pulled the air-cleaner off and it was packed tight with mouse-nests. And, this is the time of year when there are dead road-kill coons anywhere there is corn being chopped. There seems to be an endless supply. Years ago - when a good coon brought $40-$50 - you'd never see one dead on the road. But now? They all over the place, the fur looks prime for this early in the year.

Nuts and Weather don't have anything in common, Nut trees will cycle and so does winter but there not the same, Like Rabbits, some years you can find lots of them, and then other years there scarce, so as it goes --- every thing has cycles, so be thankful for what you ask for if it comes, and if it don't --- be thankful anyway - cause it will come....

Bitterly cold in the Yukon, nice in the tropics.
Around here - somewhere in between.

Don't ever remember this many walnuts, acorns, or cones on the evergreens as this year. Must be global warming? joe in ny

I have noticed when it comes to winter predictions that it is always safe to make it a bad winter. (Same goes for an impending blizzard) It is a win-win deal. If you are right you can say I told you so. If you are wrong everyone is relieved, you are forgiven and it is forgotten. When was the last time you heard anyone predict an easy winter?

The wife and I have spent the past few weeks on our days off looking for bear, hog and deer sign in the Cherokee national forest.....

Not many nuts (at least not the kind that come from trees) to be found. As a result, not seeing much in the way of big game signs.....no food, no game.....

That said, the cherokee is over 600,000 acres, and I haven't looked at very much of it.....

If nuts equal winter then it'll be mild around here..... ..
