Here are some pics. A few scattered rains kept the corn green but was never enough for most of it to polinate and set ears on. The rows were planted east & west. I came alongside and shot these looking south then east and west at an angle. You can see the rows all ways.

Cowman is that the norm for corn in your area this year or was it just this test plot that dried up so bad?

Did you cultivate it cross wise like they use to?

Gary

We used a 2 row check planter. This was a project for our club as most of us had never seen it done. It is a hill drop planter. Plants 2-3 seeds per hill every 40 inches in 40 inch rows making a checkerboard pattern if it's done right. The planter runs off a wire that trips the seeding mechanism and must be moved over at the end of each pass.
Confused now? We may try it again next year.
A lot of dryland crops failed in this area. you should see my conventional planted corn, it is a lot worse. No, Gary. we opted to use Round-up ready corn and stay out with the cultivator. Stirring up the ground would only loose more moisture. I sprayed once and it stayed pretty clean til after polination.

I attended a couple of farm sales this spring where there was check wire on a roll for sale. The auctioneer could not even get a bid. He tried to talk several older farmers into buying it for "Old Times Sake" no takers, they all like their new planters better.

It sure shows how smart those guys were back a few years when working with limited equipment.

OK, I have never grown corn large scale, but my experience growing field corn and sweet corn in a garden for many years is that it yields best when planted one stalk about a foot apart in the row. I get 2 ears per stalk this way. What is the theory in planting the 2 or 3 stalks together as in your pics? I'm in the south east and I know conditions are different there so I'm merely curious. BTW, this was a very dry summer and my garden corn would have made nothing if I hadn't watered it and I tell you, that watering from a faucet is bad business.
