A question here about what is called in the industry VM&P Naptha solvent for paint. What exactly is this stuff? Is it the same as regular naptha like the camp fuel stuff? Or maybe similar to lacquer thinner? Can you use the campers naptha or lacquer thinner as a solvent for regular acrylic enamel enamels? I find that you cannot buy the VM&P Naptha in small containers.

The VM&P stands for Varnish Makers and Painters. It is good for thinning (reducing) enamel paints. If you put naptha in lacquer, it will create an instant MESS. For automotive paints, use the reducer that the manufacturer recommends. It probably will smell just like the V&P, but might be different enough to really matter.

TSC and my local hardware stores sell 1pt round cans, and 1 qt square cans of vmp naptha... 1 gallon square cans as well.

Check your paint lable.. it will specify what it is compatible with. Generally you see paints that use MS for a brush on thinner, and naptha as a spray thinner.. etc.

No, naptha cannot be used as a replacement for laquer thinner! I used naptha, or an eqivalent to reduce Rust-o-leum, dry time expanded, but did work. Laquer thinner can be used in enamel paints (Auto type), but not if you want high gloss! Bite the bullet-spend the money-buy the correct thinner/ reducer for the paint you are using! you'll save money from having to do it over, or getting a paint job that has little gloss, or doesn't look right! Thats why they sell the reducers for different types of paint. Of course, if all you are going to do is splash some paint on an old, rusty plow, etc. you can do it.
