Hi, Have an elderly farmer friend (90 years old) with a D19 he bought years ago used from a JD dealer. The turbo which is a JD is leaking oil like a sieve.
A new one is over six bills. Can the turbo be removed and still have a usable tractor? Any advice either for removal or rebuilding the old turbo would be appreciated.

Thanx, EF

Yes you can take off the turbo, just be sure to turn the fuel pump down so that you are not over-fueling the air supply. Probably expect to loose 20% power. Don't try to rebuild the turbo at home, too precision. A $600 turbo isn't too bad, the $1000 ones make me wince. Might be able to get an acceptable match at a tractor salvage yard.

Thanks James2, Sounds like it will be a D17 with out the turbo, had not considered turning down the pump either. Are you familiar with these pumps? My home shop includes a complete machine shop with a CNC machining center, so precision does not concern me, just never had on of those beasts (turbo) apart before. Asking lots questions before have to buy him a new tractor! :-) We run gassers here on the farm. My diesel experience is limited to my Belarus tractor, which I will have tackle the pump at some point. Just have to keep the pump oil changed and she runs for a bit. Overall it has been a decent tractor.
