Diesel in Crankcase of Ford 3600

What are possible paths for Diesel fuel to get to the oil system? Was moving some hay bales Saturday and noticed oil/fuel blowing from a breather tube at the rear of the engine. Parked the tractor and checked the oil and it was full to the top of the dipstick (Usually burns/loses a little).

How long can the tractor run and under what kinds of loads with this condition before doing major damage?

Thanks for any and all input. I know I receive much more from this forum than I get an opportunity to add.

Kirk

Change the oil before you do anything else. Oil dillution with fuel is a common thing. If you have a hard to start diesel everytime you crank it and it doesn't fire you pass fuel into the oil. Have you been chnging it regularly. I am not saying that this is what's wrong, but if you change it then watch it closely and if it comes up quickly then you have a seal problem.

The only place you can get diesel into the crankcase on that engine is a seal on the injection pump. All the other pipes are mounted on the outside including the leakoff pipe. It might be possible for it to bleed through the intake manifold if you have a cols start fitted but I would be 98% certain it is the injection pump. The lift pump is mounted on the injection pump on that model.

DO NOT RUN THE ENGINE! It can fire on diese/oil mixture that gets by the pistons and rev to distruction in a couple of minutes! I have seen this happen. Its a very quick way to get the rods outside the block through a big hole!

I don't know the 3600's engine but you can get fuel into your oil several ways depending on how it is equipped. If you have a mechanical fuel transfer pump on the block the diaphram can fail and get fuel in thru it. Or the injector pump rear seal can fail. Someone with sepcific knowledge can give more help. The big thing is that with that much fuel in your oil you do not want to run that engine. Sounds like you have more fuel than oil and it will wash out the lubrication in the engine. I would dump the crankcase where it sits then refill it with oil if you have to start and move it any distance.Good luck!
