I've never used ebay. I read where folks on this forum buy and sell high dollar tractors and all kinds of stuff on ebay.

I have airplane parts to sell so I thought I'd try ebay.

Long story short ebay wants your checking account and a credit card number in order to sell with them.

Since ebay is the target of so many hackers and scammers isn't it risky to give them those numbers?

What do you folks know that I don't?

Part of the reason eBay wants that information is to insure that you are a real person. Otherwise the scammers would constantly set up new accounts and either sell nonexistant items or shill bid on stuff. This eliminates many would be crooks, leaving only the determined crooks and the honest people.

I have bought way too much on eBay and I have only had 3 problems. A cheap knife never arrived (the PO may have lost it) and 2 items (don't remember what) from 1 seller never arrived. I could never get in contact with the seller and 1 of 2 checks never cleared so I suspect that a crook was shut down, maybe by the Postal Inspectors.

I'm with Micheal D: Have a bunch of piddling stuff to sell-mostly obscure paper items- and EBay has the exposure, but I'll be getting a separate CC and setting up a separate bank acct just for the EBay transactions. For my kind of stuff the free sites don't reach a wide enough audience, and a good part of the inquiries you get from the free sites are people trolling for bargains to resell on EBay! Not that I'm against resellers, I've done my share to partly pay for my hobbies, and if I get what I want, and it's resold at a higher price, I don't mind a bit.

I've never had a problem with ebay getting hacked for my info. There are a lot of scams but ebay does a pretty good job of keeping your stuff safe. Main threat is the phishing emails and spoof emails. As long as you watch them shouldnt have a problem. Ive sold upwards of 3 grand per quarter in used parts on there.

As to using them as opposed to the other sites, visability. I always get emails looking for stuff when I have a sale on. Normally do about 3 times the business off ebay from peple who learn what I am parting at the time than the actual ebay items.

I don't know why anyone wants to pay those high fees for selling on ebay. There are several very good sites on-line right now that are completely free to use. You can register without giving out any information except your name and e-mail address, and you have the option of using a firm price or accept offers. Here is one of them.

Traffic Rusty, Traffic. Not much sense listing items where only a few will ever see them. I'm in the bussiness of selling parts, not collecting them.

And I am in the business of actually making money from selling my parts, not giving it all to feebay.
Remember, ebay had very little traffic when it all started. Why not try listing a few of your items on free site. and keep a few on ebay? When one of your ebay items sells, or if a potential buyer asks a question, you can then tell them about the free site, where they can buy it for less, because it costs you nothing to list it there?

Sorry Rusty,but I disagree.
I did a search on "oliver tractor" at Blue Jay and got one hit.Did the same on Ebay and had 489 results.
I don"t believe any other online auction company will ever get as big as Ebay is now.
Better off paying the higher fees and selling the item for more $ where the traffic is.In the long run,it will be more money in your pocket.

Bradk, please don't limit your searches to just within any single website. Instead, go to Froogle, or even Google, and do your search. You might be surprised at what turns up, and where it turns up. I've even been told that Yahoo searches will turn up items that might be in ebay, but doing an ebay search will not find them.

OK Rusty, just to make you happy, I signed on and put an ad up. Might put some more on later. But as there is no catagory for farm stuff I have my doubts. I put my ad under "business & industrial,"other"

Ebay is OK and you can trust them with your numbers. Where people get in trouble is email scams that "look" like they come from ebay asking to "update your information" They will try to convince you that your acct is "suspended" or you have bought some big ticket item and not paid etc etc NEVER respond to ANY of these emails. Always go to ebay by a known bookmark or type in ebay.com. NEVER go to ebay by an email link and you will be safe.

Hold on to your goodies. in reply to coflyboy, 10-16-2006 19:16:43
There are a lot of ways to get taken on eBay, and new ones invented every day.

I am currently dealing with one in-duh-vidual who says he moved and the item I shipped him was stolen. He gave me a police report number but he doesn't have a copy of the report itself. So from now on everyone has to pay for insurance and sign for deliveries.

I went to the bank and set up a checking and savings account to use just for my ebay stuff. I let the bank know what I was doing and they have been vary accommodating. I do have to maintain a minimum balance and show activity every quarter. I also have a card that I use just for ebay. Also talked to the card Co. just to make sure it was set up properly. They have my account coded as such so it is unable to used for anything else.

Just what I did. Maybe a little overkill but if you are worried about your identity nothing is overkill in my book.

Have been using E-bay and pay-pal for years with no problem. They have access to my bank, but it is a seperate "house hold" account with a limited amount, and not my normal account. Some sellers will not let you pay with pay-pal through credit card, cause they are charged the credit card fee. About 3 percent. If you are selling, I think you will get more if they can pay with pay-pal and not have the trouble of a draft or money order.

I have personally bought and sold everything from parts to whole tractors on ebay for over three years now with no trouble whatsoever. There are unscrupulous characters out there but with the normal amount of caution one can avoid them. Just my opinion. Harley

I have paypal set up to pay right from my checking account. The "credit card" they require is none other than my visa debit card. Both are of the same account. If they get me, it won't be for much.

WHY would anyone use a debit card for ANYTHING????

Your protection is SO much greater with a credit card, I can see no reason to use a debit card, EVER.

I love my debit card. You ever have someone say "cash only"(I say it myself all the time)? I say "No Problem" and run to the ATM and get the cash as long as it's less than 300 bucks.

Other than that, I agree with you. Why pay cash with a debit when you can use the credit card company's money for free for a month.

If you use your debit card and sign, not use your PIN code, you have the EXACT same protection as a credit card without playing with the snakes of a credit card company.

Your specific bank may offer you the same protection but they are not required to by law and can remove that protection at any time.

Giving someone access to your bank account is just not smart. The laws regarding credit cards give you greater fraud protection

EXACTLY.

Since you HAVE the cash in checking to use the debit card, use the CC (for the protection it offers), and then use the cash in checking to pay the CC before interest racks up on the amount you charged.
