Every American in this country should flat out refuse to buy the NEW 50/50 premixed ready to use antifreeze. That stupid arrogant idea should be shot down by not one jug of it being sold in the next year. That is the ultimate dumbing down of americans. Lets see, I can get a gallon of straight anti freeze for $6.88 or a gallon of prestone 50/50 premix for $7.50 or roughly $15.00 dollar per actual gallon. Have people literally become so lazy to buy this crap? Then you hear about how people are so strapped for money with this going on. Can you imagine how hard the execs at Peak and Prestone are laughing at this idea that they are actually selling the public? I was at the store the other day and there was acually more 50/50 than regular and it was kind of hard to find the straight stuff. Unreal, please don't buy it people. Later.

Everybody missed my favorite- maybe it hasn't caught on anywhere else- the fabulous "Blue Rhino" propane exchange cabinet. Most every convenience store around here has a locked cabinet outside, full of "Blue Rhino" 5 gallon propane jugs. You take your jug in, get the attendant to come out and unlock the cabinet, and you trade your empty for a full one- and part with $17 to $23 bucks in the process. And as if CEO "Ben Dover" hasn't broken it off in you enough with that scam, you have to buy one of their bottles to start with, for a cool 50 bucks! Silly me, I take my $25 bottle I got at K Mart to a service station, have the attendant fill it, and give him about 7 bucks. But the Rhino thing is "really convenient"- so much so that I went to a barbecue at a friends place this summer- they had not one, but 2 Rhino tanks, and both were empty! So they tried to start a charcoal barbie, nobody had enough cojones to put on enough starter to actually get it burning, and I finally left with no burger at about 9:30. Some fun.

Yep I think its sort of funny that they even sell it that way. But its a way for them to make money on water and most people don't understand how antifreeze works so they just plain don;t know better. Another thing I see on here is where people say to pre mix antifreeze and water before putting it in and engine. But if you take say a pint jar and fill it wiht antifreeze and put that in a gallion jar and fill the gallion jar with water, 24 hours later all the water will be green. Theres something about antifreeze that makes it mix on its own. I have taken more then one engine that I know had just water in the system, drained out say a gallion of the water then topped it off with antifreeze and never had one frezze or crack a block but yet didn't start the engine.

Sorry to appear or be stupid but I have four very expensive farm tractors and one very expensive combine and I quit mixing my own after seeing examples at the local dealership shop of what happens to those who do not mix properly or are too cheap to use distilled water or who never replace coolant or keep ph balanced. My annual coolant bill is pennies compared to my farm input budget. I have way more higher time value tasks to do than chase enough distilled water.

Is it really that hard to go to the local grocery store and buy a couple gallons of distilled water? All ya gotta do is dump in the antifreeze first, then the water. That way if you miscalculate and end up dumping in too much antifreeze, it's better than the other way around...

I know most people have more money than brains, but I'm not one of em. Just a little common sense goes a long ways on a farm.

Brilliant response. If you budget the rest of your farm like you do antifreeze you wont be farming very long. Maybe we could sell you some seed corn that is 50/50 sawdust corn mix that keeps the planter clean for $125 dollars a bag or some new diesel fuel that is 50/50 air diesel fuel mixture that sells for $3.00 bucks a gallon. Or a new john deere that comes with 100,000 gallons of free water for $400,000 dollars. It doesn't matter how value added you think your time is, if you pay twice as much for your supplies you are not going to be in business for very long. Good luck with your plan.

Some people don't have a water distiller to obtain pure water for the rad mix. It's a convienince thing. Why does microwave popcorn sell so well when far cheaper hot air popped popcorn tastes better? Why do people stand or sit inline for 5,10,15 minutes to spend $2.00 on a coffee they could brew for 10 cents? It's becomming a nation of wimps and p*ssys out there.

I agree that when you change the coolant it only makes sense to buy gallons of straight antifreeze.

But most people don't buy it to change their coolant; all they need is a pint every few months to top off the reservoir; convenience doesn't really cost them anything.

How about the cost of cereal? I haven't bought any in years but it's what, three dollars for a few ounces of corn or wheat?

Pretty much agree with you,but I think you have your Prices Backward on the Premix. It was running 2 to 3 Dollars cheaper per gal..People were buying the pre.because it was cheaper and then mixing water with it(guess What). There are parts of the country where the water is so bad that it is Foolish to try puting in these Expensive Engines. On a 8-9 Gal.cooling system it is about$10 more than using Pure Anti.Plus Distilled water. So it is a tossup on conveniece.

A little over a year and a half, I started seeing the clorox jugs go from 1 gallon to 96 ounces, but the price stayed the same.

Yeah, I certainly agree - but if we're going to gripe - lets add a few more complaints. If I still drank - I'd be asking questions like - what heck is all this Light-Beer nonsense - but I don't drink anymore. I CANNOT buy a d*mn 5 gallon gas can anymore that is worth using. Spill proof my a*s! And - it comes with a warning label - "not for use for motor vehicles." What are you supposed to do when you want to move some fuel - hire a "fuel technician?" I had to fabricate new spouts for all my new cans and also install vents. I put these gas cans in the same category as low water-useage toliets that - use more water than the old ones ever did.

Hey, it's beautiful day but I'll gripe along with you anyhoo. My once favorite jeans (Levis) went from seven belt loops to five. Not enough to keep the belt in place. No more Levis. My once favorite ice ceram (Breyers) went from a half gallon to 1.75 quarts at the same price. No more of that. Clorox from a gallon to three quarts at the same price. Now it's the house brand. Okay y'all I'm griped out for now. I'm gonna go out and enjoy some sunshine:) Cosmo

Same thing happened here when we went metric. A lot of the containers got smaller, but some were just relabelled odd numbers and price went up. Like we can't buy a pound of coffee anymore, we get either 454 grams (equal to a pound) when stuff is impotred from the US or 300 grams if it's made in Canada. The 300 gram package costs more than the pound package. All because a few quebec types wanted to emulate their distant french cousins. Served no useful purpose whatsoever.

With the premixed antifreeze, what is missed there is what do you do in COLD climates where you need higher than 50/50? We mix 70/30 up here where we see down into the -50° range in winter. Hard to do that if you've only got 50/50 to start with. It's not popular here yet, thankfully!

As Bob mentioned below, I doubt the anti freeze execs are laughing nearly as loud as the genuises who pulled off the bottled water scam. At least with 50/50 you're getting something for your money other than what's in the nearest faucet. In my biased opinion anyone who buys bottled water unnecessarily has too little sense and too much money anyway.

COSMO, glad you said unnecessarily. Anyone who has suffered Montezuma's revenge while on vacation can appreciate the need to drink bottled water rather than the local stuff.

Davpal, I agree 100% with you. I think they count on the general population as being stupid and thus a product ready to use is appealing. Dollars and cents wise there are just stupid people out there that would never think to figure out that a straight gallon of prestone will give them twice as much anti freeze for the same price. Its the same morons who see a sign that says 'Sale'. $4.49.....it regularly sells for $3.99, saw that the other day at a local Canadian Tire Store. The psychology of merchandisung counts on people being gullable and plain stupid and it makes big companies lots of money.

Is it any worse than the price of the bottled water kids think they need to drink? It's at least as expensive as pop, with all the added sugar, flavors, and carbonation. Go figure.

We have fairly "hard" water in out area, so I DO use distilled water for "mix" with full-strength anti-freeze. Occasionally, I DO buy the pre-mix, for convenience.

With today's aluminum engines, using GOOD antifreeze, and pure water, and CHANGING it every couple of years is money WELL spent!
