Is there any inherent flaws in the Hydros? I have less than 80 acres of grass hay to plant, maintain and, if the cows don't get to it fast enough, harvest. I would think 60-70 HP would do fine, so if I have it right, the 84 is the utility version, the 85 is a more rare 75 HP MFWD and the 86 is a normal tractor around 70 HP? Then I've seen the Hydro 70,100 and 186's advertised at around 100 HP. Seems to me just about any of those would work out, but very nice condition is a must. Would any of you have or know of one for sale? I can drive quite far from south TX to pick it up. E-mail me at stetts@ev1.net or call (830) 789-1109. Thanks muchly. Stetts

Pick up a copy of the heavy equip trader.. or heck.. just look up traderonline.com .. there is a fellow in south GA that has some IH's for sale.. not sure what they are.. 686??

I've bought a nic old but serviceable ford 5000 from that guy that I'm speaking of.. he's a real straight shooter.. Mike was his name.. etc.. Southern tractor or something like that.

good luck

I'e been looking for a hydro and preferably an 84 or 85 w/ mfwd. The 84 and 85 would be lower and more utility tractor looking than the others. Like a 684 or 885. They also seem to be rarer than the others. The 84 and 85 are 4 cylinder engines. The others are 6 cylinder. The 84 and 85 have the same engine as an IH 784. PTO HP would be about 65-67. The drawbar HP is a lot less than you would get with the same engine w/ a conventional transmission (maybe 10% less). I'm not sure that a hydro would be a real advantage in doing hay over a regular transmission and it would probably use more fuel, a lot more if it is a gasser. Ask Allan in NE. JMHO

Mine did fine in the hay field as far as fuel goes. Didn't have a problem there.

Where it did drive me nuts was on the wheat ground. It would only run a day and a half on a tankfull when plantin' wheat. :>(

'Course, planting is slower work too.

I have a 544D Hydro. Hydro drives are very nice to have for most any PTO work. For tillage I would recommend having or borrowing a gear drive. I have noticed that my hydro dont seem to have the raw power of the same model in a gear drive. I have heard that the hydro pump takes about 20HP from the tractor pulling power, dont know if its true or not. Everyone told me to stay away from the hydro's. I tried her out before buying to see if the hydro slipped or had any other loud issues when being used. You should be able to stall the engine locking the brakes or putting a hard load on the tractor at a low to med idle, just as you would a gear drive. There are days I wish I had a gear drive, but there is never a day that I wish I did not have this Hydro. You will use quite a bit more fuel with the Hydro than a gear drive so make sure that is in you plans. Other wise happy shopping

Stetts,

For 80 acres of hay, I think the Hydro 100 and Hydro 186 are awfully big tractors and actually, really much too big for your purposes.

I'd stay with the Hydro 70 or Hydro 86, which as you say, are rated at about 70 horsepower.

There are no "inherent flaws" in any IH tractor, but you'd want to be darned sure that the transmission is in good repair, as they are VERY expensive to fix.

Just got mine all set up to feed cattle this winter. Brrrrr rrr..... .

Allen, how on earth do you get inside that cab? Is it a rear entrance or a half-door on the side? Looks like the loader frame would keep my big XXX out of that tractor. Tom

Half folding door on the left side.

I've still got to repostion those struts down and back a bit to give the door room to swing; Big Marv from this forum is sending me the ladder, which was my only missing part.

I'll then "cattywampus" the ladder about 30 degrees, pointing it more forward-facing and hanging from a small "porch" affair.

At that point, it will just be a matter of climbing the ladder (2 steps) and simply stepping over that strut.

Piece of cake. :>)

This picture of the door is on the wrong tractor. Actually, the cab sets further forward on mine and misses the tire completely.

That is a 560 that someone has "fabricated" the cab to. Since the seat sets back about a foot on those tractors, he had to "readjust" things to make the cab fit.

Nice looking tractor. I purchased a 684 this past saturday and don't have any knowledge about those tractors. I was wandering if yours was an 84 series tractor. thanks
