Don't get discouraged here, a stock late model A can usually hold it's own in a TRUE division 1 (NATPA) class, no reason to really soup it up if it's that nice and original. Our A is the smallest Deere we have that will hold it's own as a rule, that's why we usually take the Super C or Super H instead of the JD B, but the A ('48) shows well untill ya get up to the Super Ms. Pete

A stock late A will do fairly decent, you can swap out reduction gears out of a early one to speed it up a little. I just stick to bolt on stuff, and swap the wheelie bars and weight brackets off back to stock for the off season to move hay with my WD-45. I agree with the others that if it is that nice I wouldn't put a monster crank and pistons in it, but there is no reason it has to be a trailer queen either. That bothers me a whole lot more than someone haveing a little fun with it and giving it a work out kicking around some farmalls.

I know that it is your tractor to do as you see fit with. It is just kinda sad to see one that is as original as you say this one is put on a pulling track and dogged the way you have to do to even make a showing, much less the fact that the "A" is not going to be all that sucessful pulling against the others it will have to pulll with. It sure would make some collector happy to get one this original and you could take the premium price it probably would command and buy one ready to pull. Just my own thoughts. Gene Davis(Ga)

Don't take this personally, but trade the JD A
on a Farmall M. You don't stand much of a chance.
Heck most G's can't pull with a good running stock Farmall M.

You've done enough to start with. Pull it at your local club and see where you are in the rank. You may not need any more! I agree, don't ruin it's originallity for the pulls. As for the Red comments,I always thought the "A" was to the "M" as the "B" was to the "H". If that's true (we're talking BONE stock here) around my area (cent. MI.) the "H" will NOT out pull the JD "B",period!! Maybe they aren't parallel to the M & A ,I'm sure someone will let me know. Like the one poster said, do what you wish and see the results and go on from there. This forum is full of opinions, the track isn't. Good luck.

I said best traction not biggest tires. Depending on the track the tread should be tall or short, 23 or 45 degree, low profile or a tall tire. Rim width is vital as well. Odds are your tire pressure was too low and let the rear of the tractor squat down. What was you fore/aft balance like? What was the drawbar length? What was the drawbar height? What kind of hitch, a loop or clevis?

Spend your $ on tires. The three main factors in winning pulls are traction, traction and traction.

If you got a good stock unmolested tractor keep it that way, because in a stock class you are going up against guys that have spent $5,000 and up to get them to pull with. Even then a Farmall M or Oliver or Minnie Mo will whip on you.
